Hi from Alabama
on: May 24, 2013, 07:06:05 AM
probably should have started here...i'm a tattoo artist and theater tech from central alabama.  i've always had a thing for tools, and the more compact and combined, the better.  i also have a pretty nifty collection of knives and swords, etc, that i will try to get photographed and up in the next few days.

probably the most-used tool in my life is a crescent wrench for theatrical lighting, or a set of hex wrenches for tattoo machine maintenance/build.  i've been doing a conversion to rca cord from the old less reliable clip cords on all my machines, and the tool i've used most often, aside from my atrocious soldering, is the surge with the bit kit and extender.  again, i will try to have some pictures up soon.

well, let's see.  quick photo drop of what i can link easily...

here is a sheath i have been making for a damascus bowie.  i did most of the work on the handle and i think the blank came from a customer, by way of trade.

that was before the hours of sanding.  i will get a more current photo or two of that project.

some cutlery attachments in progress for the surge.  i was bored and recovering from being sick, and dragged out the dremel on some rather cool flatware (i liked the spoons) that we had in props storage.

that's what i have handy.....i'll get to work on some decent photos.  and thanks for the welcome!  this appears to be an awesome board.

edit:  i didn't have any better sense (i'll blame the cold meds) than to let the surge sit in the blowback from the dremmel, so i had to float out a lot of trash that got on a brand new tool.  masterful.

yay, double post!  speaking of wallets, i know what y'all mean, i have already ordered two skinths, and mre leatherman stuff and i haven't even figured out my current EDC.  here is my wallet...i have changed it out from the blue altoids lids to the black ones though.  i have no photographs yet of the inside, but i'll take a few, there is am LED light and a few nifty attachments in there.  the chain is sterling silver wire, about 18 gauge if i am not mistaken, and i rolled and made the links and the chain myself.

and yes, that's a gerber in the background.  it is my spouse's; i have been wiping rust out of it and trying to repair or modify a broken saw blade, which might make it onto this wallet if it isn't careful.

it's a corruption of the greek word for 'fighters.'  or more literally, 'struggle/combatant.'  i applied it a long time ago to a comic character i draw from time to time and it ended up sort of a permanent screen name.

my first major in college was classical languages.  i changed it to theatre, but i still enjoy a lot of the latin signatures i have seen here.

Yes. It still means "Fighters" in modern Greek. Very nice!

howdy!  'always happy to meet a producer.'   :D :D :D :D :D :D

seriously i'm mainly in community theater right now (i am a scantily paid volunteer, i call it), i own a small tattoo shop the next town over for my day job, and i do a lot of art-related side jobs, as well as a whooooooole lot of drawing.  that's where most of my groovy tools are, on the drafting board as it were, but in the process of what we'll call 'artistic tech' i've found ninety percent of making stuff is plain old handiwork, and it's where i always end up, well away from the drafting board.

but in the end, you guys seem way more fun than the pen and ink forums.   :drink:

also....i would love to do a couple of pics post with some of my tattoo machines if there is interest; i know they aren't multitools, like, at all....but they have an interesting history and haven't changed much in the hundred years or so they have been electrified (and not just basically tiny hand-woodcutting tools), also they are shiny and therefore way cool.  where would i put a thread like that, so it wouldn't be in the way, if anyone's interested?
