What did you use your Dremel for ?
on: May 24, 2013, 04:21:09 PM
As a sideline for The Dremel Owners Club thread, I thought a show us your Dremel project(s), big & small thread ,in which you have used your Dremel/Rotary tool would be interesting  :think:

Recently I have been on a Aussie made Sidchrome tool purchasing kick.My first big purchase as a almost adult(17) was my Sidchrome tool kit,I was working as a apprentice motor mechanic at the time.I got it in the late 80's & most of the tools were Aussie made.A couple exceptions were my Sidchrome shifting spanners which were made in Sweden by Bahco & re-branded Sidchrome's. Stanley bought Sidchrome & closed down all local manufacturing some years ago.

I recently nabbed a pair of Aussie made Sidchrome shifters  8).
Photo from the actual Ebay auction;

The 2 shifters were in need of some TLC especially the 6 inch one. The wee shifter did not close completely :think:.Not a functional problem but an annoyance.
After a quick clean;

On inspection the first problem was the rack component of the worm gear was being fouled from it's full travel by the spanner's casting;

I wanted too pull the shifter apart to give it a proper clean & aid inspection.The second problem was the worm gear's mounting screw had a crude retention feature;

The groves do not act as a thread lock on the screw BUT they are a very effective way of stopping the screw from falling out.I thought it might of been a owner mod but I spotted the same 'feature' on another Sidchrome shifter on Ebay.This feature means you can not remove the screw, which you need to do too pull the shifter apart :think:. Enter the Dremel  >:D :D

I used X2 cheap after market diamond coated burrs with my dremel too de-burr the screw housing so I could remove the screw & then remove the shifting mechanism, post de-burr ;

Both shifters apart, after cleaning & the tools used to do it ;

X2 jeweller's screw drivers, SwissChamp magnifying glass(very handy),wire brushes for cleaning,diamond coated burrs X2 & LM Wave diamond file.

My good old Dremel , I did not use the sander on this project.

Spanner after housing de-burr , enabling rack to travel the whole way through  8)

Shifters cleaned ,thread lock applied to gear screw threads & reassembled  8)
Pic with my X2 Swedish beauties + the Aussie beauties  8) :D

Please share with us your latest Dremel/Rotary tool projects  :gimme: :D

I didn't take any pics of the door project, didn't want any white bits of plastic getting all over my DSLR!
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

Nice use of tools, Mat. I haven't used my Dremel in a while. I'll try to remember to take pics when I do. :D
