Most of you know the history my Leatherman Skeletool CX(original serrated edge model), and how I got it as a "get well" gift from a group here at MT.O back in 07.  Along with the fact it has been my EDC ever since that day.

Well, after years of use, abuse, cleaning, lubing, replacement screwbits too numerous to mention, and situations you shouldn't subject ANY multitool to.  All of that has now caught up to her :(  The bladeis showning wear down(literally), and the joints have loosen to the point I found it opening in my pocket  :o

After a bit of soul searching.  I broke down, hopped over to the Marlton REI and bought a new CX(plain edge).  With the old CX officially retired to a place of honor in my curio-cabinet(in front of PST autographed engrave by Tim Leathermn himself!) :salute:

Today and tomorrow I'll be giving the new CX her shake down carry and use.  Like ant new MT, she's a beauty:factory fresh edge(the plain edge will take a bit of getting used to), joints are tight as a virgin MT should be, and she screams with the desire-"USE ME!!!!"  And I look forward to the honor and priviledge of deflowering her

Still, when I see my old CX.  It brings back memories of the numerous we went ".......once more into the valley of the shadow of death........" together!!  And we both came out smiling!  I'm not ashamed to say, with a tear in my,  I will miss her!!!!

This seems like the point in a movie where there would be a montage with an old 80's song playing in the background.

We need pictures of the old well loved cx.  :)

If only that old CX could talk! Of course if it could you'd probably have to put it in a very deep hole instead of a curio cabinet!

I'm glad it meant so much to you over the years!

In fact, it's in front of the PST, with Tim Leatherman's signature, I won from you a couple of years ago

I got that signed at SHOT 2008- my first SHOT Show.

Bob and I each have one from that show as well, plus that's where I got him to sign the green Charge AL.

Good luck with the new skeletool.

I'm also on my second cx I sent my original combo edge cx to Leatherman because the liner lock detent was wore off and the blade would come open in my pocket  they sent me a refurbished tool with a plane edge blade.

I can't tell you that I prefer one over the other.

I will say the plane edge is easier to sharpen.

enjoy the new tool. :)

I'm actually disappointed to hear that five year old Leathermans are being worn out.

But even you must admit.  Some of us(me included) have used the skeletools in ways you shouldn't subject a HEAVY DUTY multitool(any brand) to
Especially, since the Skeletool is for lighter EDC use.  And being EDC, hence the Skeletool is always with us.

The detent on mine is pretty worn too (the original CX version), but the liner lock is strong enough to keep the blade closed. I never had a problem with the blade opening in my pocket. How loose is the pivot screw of the blade on yours. Did you try tightening it a bit?

My plier/handles were partially open.  Got pinch bit :o

The blade was the least of my problem.  Except for some wear down of the blade itself from constant cleaning, oiling, and sharpening.  Grant can confirm that I'm borderline neurotic about keeping a knife sharp. :ahhh

All I'm saying is that it's a bit optimistic to put a 25 year warranty on something that lasts about five.

Though LM has a wonderful liberal warranty, how many of us(me included) have crossed that line which seperates use from abuse??  BE HONEST!!!!
So I'm not surprised that my old CX's lifespan is short!!

Besides.  Even if I used their warranty, and replaced my old CX with a new CX.  The "ol'gal" has served me well, and deserves a better fate than being taken apart and thrown into the scrap heap.  Hence, the curio-cabinet and buying a new one!! :salute:

To be honest, I think that really depends on what you define as (or more accurately, what Leatherman) would define as "abuse."

I occasionally push tools beyond their limits or use them for things they aren't designed for, but I don't believe they actually are being "abused" although I will admit that is a matter of perspective.

Basically these tools are provided as a relatively convenient method of being adequately prepared to meet a number of basic challenges, either in every day life or in specific situations (dedicated tools, like the MUT or bicycle tools, MP600 Fisherman variant etc), which, in my mind at least, means they should be able to deal with the unexpected and be designed to be used unconventionally at times.

While I don't expect to be able to swap a diesel engine out of a mine truck with a Wave, I do expect the tool to perform more than just turning a screw and cutting thin wire.

I took my new CX to Cape May for a shakedown run at the light house, then enjoyed a lobster at The Lobster House.  Along with a few other new knife and tools.
Opening a lobster with a CX would probably give Tim Leatherman cardiac arrest if he witnessed that :p

My Sideclip is 13 years old, I've beat the hell out of it and sharpened the blade countless times.  I've filed the wirecutters a few times and they still cut paper.  I've turned thousands of screws with it, and after all that abuse, every tool snaps into place and doesn't fold on me.  It's the toughest leatherman I've owned.

Guess they don't make skeletools like they did sideclips.  But we already knew that.

I'm with BT though, when this sideclip finally has enough and calls it quits, it's getting a final resting place in my safe, along with other things I treasure.  It means too much to me to even think of sending it in to get a replacement.  No wingman for me, If my sideclip goes then I will fork out the small fortune for a new(to me) sideclip.

And on the same note, I think it's sad that people are honestly willing to retire tools that wore out within the warranty, simply because they don't care to get the crap that will replace them.  I'm not saying the higher end tools are no good anymore, but the more cost friendly line is completely unworthy to replace any older leatherman.

Note: to me at least, the Skeletools are still good tools all around.
