Spectacular Flea Market Find
on: June 10, 2013, 01:53:29 AM
Whelp, went to the flea market today for the first time in about a month, pulled out an absolutely spectacular find:

The pictures seriously do not do this pen justice.

F.A. Porsche design titanium fountain pen with a solid 18k gold F nib.  Beautiful vintage piece with  "W. Germany" stamping, likely made by Graf von Faber-Castell.  After a light cleaning it writes beautifully, with a smooth line and no skipping.

$30!

I was looking for a new fountain pen and this was an awesome find.

:tu: don't know much about pens but that is a beauty.  I go to flea markets from time to time and know what a crap shoot it is to find anything decent.  last week tho I got a g shock for $3 because the battery was dead and the seller didn't know if it worked, it did so total score.

Congratulations to both of you- that pen is gorgeous!  I love a nice fountain pen but I never use them any more because pretty well all of my writing is done in the field and the Fisher Bullet makes much more sense for that.

I never really find anything too decent at flea markets unfortunately.

Awesome bargain :tu:

You can throw that up on ebay and make a tidy profit very easily.

Nice score :tu: yet I don't know the first thing on fountain pens, dip them in ink and write? Like Def said all writing in field, better choice, the bullet, or zebra telescope, but my fav the 701!  ;)
love the all metal, especially the titanium, I'm sure that has one heck of a good solid feel to it.. The wife and I loooove flea markets, there used to be a great one back in Ct, funny name "The Eliphents Trunk" lol, that place used to be a good score, got me a few things, got me a Alice backpack with frame all in good shape for $5, that and the food! OMG I soo miss the fresh fruit and fried chicken  OMG, there was one in Pa, the wife and I went in first thing, get a box of chicken, then walk around, and get another box for the ride home, so miss it  JR

Modern fountain pens usually have an ink cartridge.  You put the cartridge in the pen and when you close it a spike pierces the cartridge and allows the ink to flow down to the nib.

No need to carry small vials of ink just in case you want to write down someone's phone number!  :D

Ahh, gotcha, thanks for the update! Still out of my league, heck a pencil works for me, lol, cheaper too! That's kinda funny, we spend $millions$ to come up with a pen that will write under water, sub freezing temps, upside down, for going into space yet just Russia uses a $.05 pencil, to accomplish the same thing, lol kinda funny no? One of the really nice things about this particular piece is that it uses standard international short cartridges, which are available at just about any stationary store like Staples.  I actually had a converter on hand so I use the pen with bottled ink.

That's good. I miss using a fountain pen, but it would bleed far too much for my needs.  I can appreciate them, but they just aren't for me. In fact, I'm trying to phase out pens entirely and use my tablet for as much as possible.

Have you tried noodler's bulletproof black ink? Probably still won't work in rain though.

I only have a few cheap lamy fountain pens, but I certainly enjoy using them, feels so nice to write with because you don't have to use any downward pressure like with ball points, soooo smooth...

Just good old Parker Quink works pretty well for this pen.

Def, I understand the frustration - fountain pens, unfortunately, can't handle constant temperature/humidity changes.  They're also poor for carbon paper, which is why I didn't use them for the longest time.

Very cool find. You may be interested to know that, about 2 years ago or so, I snagged a similar deal on this same Porsche Designs fountain pen. After using it myself for a short while for fun, I turned it over on Fountain Pen Network forum to a collector in Australia for about $500.

Have fun.
