British Army Knives
on: July 13, 2013, 03:19:51 AM
Just wondering where you can get a genuine, rather than in the style of,British Army Knife?

Are they worth the effort?

Have done Swiss(M1961),Spanish,Dutch(90s patern liner lock),it kinda feels a little unpatriotic not having a British one!

Did you mean this sort of thing Kirk?

These are the NATO issue numbers if you want to do a search  ;)

NSN 5110-99-301-0301 (with locking blade & can opener)
NSN 5110-99-794-0491 (without can opener)
NSN 7340-99-975-7402 (with can opener & no spike)
NSN 7340-99-975-7403 (with can opener & spike)

They are still being made in Sheffield but I think will have something like 'British army knife' on the side

I've got one, it was a gift from badwolf. They are solid little smurfs. Can opener, no spike, non locking.

Yep that's the kinda thing Tony, thank you :tu:

And yeh,if I could find something with the arrows it would be my ideal. I had a look at a couple at my local army surplus, but the 'genuine' was a locker, the other was one of the nautical ones,so not much use(ended up buying a cute little Nieto slippie instead)

The 2piece BAK looks exactly like what I want for a dirty knife at work. :o
A nice non treatening blade, and a can opener for scraping off and digging out dirt. I hate it when I have to use my SAK for digging out packed dirt and gravel out of the opening holes of a manhole lid for inspection or similar tasks.
Its good that I can blame Kirk, with good reason this time, for buying another MT.  :D

Surely the huge marlin spike would be good for digging out dirt too.

I considered that at first. The spike looks perfect for digging, but I think it will add too much weight and bulk for easy EDC carry.

Here in the US at least, BAKs are generally more expensive than most SAKs, so it wouldn't make sense to use a BAK to save a SAK...

It does make sense, atleast to me  ;)

The tools I use the most are knife (clean), flat driver, small flat driver/phillips, awl and cap lifer. Therfore I EDC a Wenger SI. If I use the tools on the Wenger SI for digging, I will soon have ruined one of those tools, wich again would ruin the whole knife, as it no longer fulfills most of my needs. Then I would have to get a new Wenger SI, wich will only get more and more difficult, instead of just having a dedicated dirty knife.

And If Im not mistaken the SI is more valuable than the BAK.  :)

Well, since you're looking at using a current production knife vs. a discontinued one, I agree that changes the calculation.  Also, I can certainly see the value in carrying a "clean" knife for food prep etc. and a "dirty" knife for digging and other such tasks.

The point I was trying to make was simply that (for example) I can get a NIB Vic Pioneer for probably $25, vs. about $30 for a BAK (two-blade non-locking version) vs. about $40 for a BNK (includes spike).  Perhaps this situation is reversed in Norway?

Either way, if you're happy with your kit, that is what matters...

The search for the perfect EDC combo never stops. There is always something new and shiny, that might just be better then what you have right now. :D

Just to jump in quickly...

BAK is just plain  8) 8) 8) 8) ... And I mean sub zero cool...

Vs. SAK which is more or less "plain" knife you're probably going to see almost every day...

That should be taken in considreation also...

That being said... I love SAK for it's availability, wide range of options and price, BAK on the other hand is cool!

No argument there.  I'll probably have to pick up one or two for my collection at some point.

I got the BAK about a week ago and Im very happy with it. It came pretty dull out of the box, and needed sharpening, but I got a real nice edge on it.
Also the can opener is huge! :o
Its the biggest can opener I have ever seen on a MT! That suits me perfectly as that makes it a even better digging tool, but the British army must have some very big tins of canned food. Or maybe its a emergency exit tool for tank crews?  ::)

Picture below is next to a wenger SI.

Nice pics all.

I've had a couple of these knives but gave them away  - they're too bulky and uncomfortable for me. When you compare them with an SI... well there is no comparison.

They are bombproof though...............

They are a pocket full alright!

I once saw a video of a bloke batoning with one, and I reckon its one of the very few folders capable of it (not that i'd recommend it!) :)
