Gear & EDC Colours? :D
on: August 03, 2013, 11:13:59 PM
The question is very simple..... what colour gear do you prefer and why? :D

The general concept is that.... expensive and high-quality gear is usually tactical and black. But sometimes there is this bright colour knife, multitool, flashlight, lighter, wallet, paracord bracelet or sth. else.

So, what is your preferred colour regarding gear?

Two years ago I used to like black, khaki, military colours, camo, od green, etc. However, since last year, for some reason, I've been into bright colours like red, blue aaaaaaand even more recently- bright yellow, orange, green (don't have anything in these colours yet, though). What's your gear colour? How do you choose it?  :sak: :multi:

I mostly like more discreet colours, like black, grey, or maybe navy. Actually, the darker blues are my favourite colour.

So, for things like sheaths, wallets, and stuff like that, it's black. For tools and knives, I prefer just bare metal.

Though honestly, I think, if I'd order a Skinth right now, it would be navy blue

Stuff arbitrary people won't see, like knives, can be happy red, orange or whatever. For bags and packs I prefer gray. It isn't "tactical" like black, while being very discreet. Also, it's not that usual, so I get a tiny bit of individualism, while still blending in. And gray handles a little dirt. :)

I have no rhyme or reason to what I carry. My flashlight is black (a 4Sevens AA), my knives are all different colors, usually with natural materials. My gym bag is green, my backpack is a twilight blue. I have navy, ruby red, and green bandanas. My watch is black (G-Shock Mudman).  I wear blue jeans nearly everyday to work, with different colored polo shirts. The only colors I don't have represented in my wardrobe are pink and purple, and very little yellow. I have a healthy dose of white, blue, orange,  green, red, brown, grey, and black. Blue and burnt orange are my favorite colors.

Oftentimes there is no choice, as the gear is only available in a single color (commonly black).  I generally dislike paint or other coatings, so if there is an option for just plain steel (vs. black or OD or whatever), I'll take the plain steel.  There are other things, like SAKs or Bic lighters, where I prefer brighter colors since it makes them easier to find if dropped.  There are a few items, like bandannas, that I feel really should be brightly colored in case they are needed for signaling purposes.

I tend to lean more toward the black stuff but I do like the annoying fluorescents like orange, green and yellow. Also, anything in black and yellow for my Pittsburgh Steelers :D

Oho, still the black/plain/steel lovers prevail :D Anyway, good to read about others' tastes :D

I've read that some people prefer bright colours if they go in the woods, because if they drop a bright orange knife in the grass, for example, it would be easier to notice :D

For stuff I carry, and plan to carry for a LONG time, I prefer stainless steel. It doesn't get all worn/scratched looking. Kind of ageless.

For outdoor gear, I like bright colors. Red is good, safety orange or safety yellow are better. That's for SMALL items, so if I drop them, or set it down, I can find it more easily.

My current bag is black. It's intended to not draw attention. My backpack is OD green with brown leather bottom, which also just sort of blends in.

If you asked for the general 'favorite color' or 'what color game piece do you prefer' kind of color, then Green.

However, the simple truth of availability means more items than I would have otherwise chosen are black. Like the old Henry Ford joke: You can have any color you want, as long as it's black.

I will simply NOT buy an item if the only available 'color' is camouflage.

+1  :tu: . I really don't like all the military coloured greens and khaki's, let alone camouflage...

Why do't you like the military/camo stuff? :D :D I don't really prefer them now either, though....

I used to love them when I was a teen, but later in life I realized I wasn't gonna be a part of S.W.A.T. team or a ninja, so I changed my colour priorities.... lol

Walking around with camouflage gear in an urban environment is an excellent way of being mistaken for a mall ninja.  :mn:

In the forest or the mountains I prefer to be found if having to call for help, and also I prefer hunters to realize there are people around.

Black mainly, followed by stainless. But black is my favorite. Black knife, black multi, black motorcycle, black jeep, black anything.

When I was in the Army I asked a guy why he bought the black pack instead of the camo one and his answer kind of dumb-founded me. He told me that he wasn't going to be in the military for forever and wanted to use it after he got out and moved on from the service. I just couldn't comprehend not being a Soldier I guess and everything I had was some sort of camo. Now, I really don't want anything to do with camo unless it's dealing with hunting.

I'm mostly pretty drab, sticking mostly to black, gray, tan and olive but I do have an appreciation for brighter colors, and I like to get yellow or orange knives, tools and other gear when I can.

For EDC/"Urban survival gear", I tend to choose whatever colors that is original or will blend in to the surrounding.  For urban survival gear, I figure any 'militant' look to the gear, especially bags that is in camo color or has a tactical look, might raise eyebrow from local authorities or people around me.

For outdoor use, the choice of colors is more vibrant, mostly for easy spotting if I lost it or if I were lost.

I'm not really a black kind of guy, far more likely to have greens, browns, tans, blues etc.  Muted tones for me overall, nothing too bright.  Some stuff though, torches for example, just aren't normally available in anything other than black.

I just realised I'd love a safety orange small flashlight. I've temporarily lost my Fenix E01 much too often already, when just putting it down shortly...

I have a gold-colored E01, and while not quite as good as safety orange, it is much easier to spot than the black.

Basic black for most of my bags, especially the ones with PALS webbing- everyone's black is black, and lots of cheap bags are black, both of which help it be less obvious. A green bag with two or three pouches in different shades of green stands out, while all black is just all black, and black webbing against a black body is pretty much invisable.

That being said, my current EDC bag is green, "ranger green" rather than OD because  it isn't OD green.
