Should I Sell My Swisstool and Spirit?
on: September 02, 2013, 07:18:21 PM
I will take the swisstool and spirit out and look how well they are made and what high quality they are, but when I go to do something I will just grab my LM Rebar and do the job. I really don't know why, other than the the others looks almost to nice to use. Also, the rebar is lighter. Is this crazy? Also would kinda like the try the LM ST300 since I am a farmer and read somewhere that a farmer could not farm with his ST300. ???

I got my swisstool use and it was well used at that so putting right to work was easy.  I commented that if it were new and shiny I too would have a hard time wanting to scratch it up, that being said my swisstool looks great with its battle scars.  go ahead and give them a good work out and you'll see they are not only a beautiful tool but a damn good tool at that.

Yes, the Swisstools are fantastic. Yes, thinking of selling one is bordering on blashpemy. But if you have something you're not using and it's just taking up space, why not sell at least one and buy yourself a few pints?

well keep one in good condition and start slowly using the other. perhaps the implements themselves will be a reason to keep or to sell them

Razor, everyone had different needs, wants, likes, and dislikes. If you are finding that you prefer Leatherman over Victorinox, there is nothing wrong with that. If you aren't using them, than by all means sell them if that is your want. I know quite a few people who can't stand having tools that go unused. If you plan on collecting, then I would keep them as they are both excellent tools.

Of course, you could just use them and see if you like them better. Don't worry about how nice they look...after all, they are tools made to be used. You will find them to be a little slippery when wet though, due to that beautiful polished stainless. But everyone's mileage differs.
A little Leatherman information.

Force yourself to carry each tool exclusively for a week or two, so that you have to deal with whatever turns up and evaluate them all equally. Thw Swisstool and Spirit are excellent tools, but whether they are the right tool for you and your circumstances will only been determined once you properly put them through their paces and give yourself a chance to get tuned in to them. Don't sell them yet, give them a bloody good workout and see how you fare first

The Swisstool and the Spirit can both take quite a beating, but I also had problems to start using them because they were so pretty.  I only started using my Spirit once I owned more than one of them, so I had one to use for EDC, and one (and now some more ... ::)) as back up or for the collection.

I've been carrying my Spirit every day for about two years now, and it has some minor scars, but I think it still looks as pretty as the day I bought it (most of the pics I post here from my Spirit are from my EDC Spirit, because that's the one I always have on me, so you can always check some of my pics to see how it looks now  ;)).

I bought myself a Rebar last week, and yesterday was the first time I carried it with my Swisschamp, without taking my Spirit with me for back up (because I didn't trust the Rebar, maybe stupid, I know), the Spirit has been the tool I had on me for the last two years, and it's not easy to break with that habit, but I'm going to try to leave the Spirit at home and use another tool for EDC from time to time ;).

a few more points to consider.  I used my wave exclusively for work until I got a charge tti then the wave got a break but after a short while I went back to my wave as I wasn't too keen on the cap crimper plier head of the tti.  I got my used swisstool recently and have carried it since and I will continue to carry it for all of this week.  I really love that I can access all the other implements while the tool is closed.  I especially love the blunt(ish) plier head over the needle nose of the wave.  as far as wear the tool I have is scratched but it looks great, the red (paint) is definitely gonna be the first thing to go but the tool still is very shiny and to me looks great in its used condition. this tool feels like it could take a beating and still have much to give.
I added some pictures of the tool and the condition I got it in. the only thing I did was clean and oil it on the interior.

Razor,

Taking this same question and asked in LM subforum, you'd probably get different responses. :D  I agree with what Chako said, that everyone is totally entitle to have his/her own opinion and how they treat their tool at their disposal.  Either way is totally cool.

My 2 cents are I do like the quality/weight/performance balance of Swisstools and their quality, and personally find the LM tools might rust a little easier than my swisstools which need more maintenance.

The only time I do prefer LM tools over Swisstools is when a lot of cutting job is needed, then I would reach for a one-hand lockable blade models of LM(TTi, Surge, etc) or simply carry an extra beater folding knife.  However, in terms of getting the right tool fast and easy, Swisstool always win in my book.  ;)

Yeah, just a few more right ::)  I think you need to establish some sort of rotational schedule now that you're switching it up with the Rebar ;)

As for the question at hand:  I have the same reservations about using my Spirit in any potentially dirty or hard way, but I don't usually encounter uses of that nature (of course your uses may vary).  I personally wouldn't sell mine, but it's the only one I have.  If I had both a Swisstool and Spirit like you do, I would possibly sell one if I was using neither, but I would keep one (most likely the Spirit) just to have one.  As many have said, they are a very handy tool, with everything being outside accessible, and they can be put to serious use and come out of it fine :tu:

I think I will keep them for now. I figure that if I sell them it will be a lot like a lot of knives and guns I have sold. Always wanting them back. I may try a ST300 when I can afford and see how they compare. Thanks for all the replys.

I say keep it and give it a go.  I use my Swisstool, but like others, it's so nice looking, sometimes I don't want to scratch it or get it dirty.  It is a very capable tool though, and will stand up to just about any abuse you can throw it.

I used my Spirit today to clean out the lint catcher in my dryer. I had to take it out to do it and it worked like a charm. The best phillip screw driver I have ever tried. Also, used the serrated knife blade to cut up some old ham for the dogs. It worked like a charm. I am sure  glad I did not sell this one! You guys know what you are talking about. Thanks all.

The biggest problem with the Spirit is that it's just to pretty for its own good, but once you've taken that first step and started using it, you'll find it's a great tool that can handle just about anything you throw at it  ;).

Razor,

I prefer the LM Multitools because they're "grippier" (if that's a word) when working with UTF and diesel.  So I am like you, I like the looks of the Vic offerings but always reach for the Leatherman when a job needs doing (usually my Charge ALX)

For the longest time my Swiss Tool was the standard I measured others against. A lot have failed and fell by the wayside ie ST300, Wave Spirit, Buck, SOG etc.

Now I carry a LM Kick with a pocket clip and haven't used the others for ages.

Sell them if you don't use them. Don't be like me.
