Question for the Dog lovers
on: May 15, 2008, 01:02:46 AM
This week we have been looking after our In-laws dog that they recently rescued.  He is a real nice Dog and has a great temperament considering that for most of the day he has 2 children climbing all over him.

We are not sure what breed he is though, and as there are a few Dog lovers on the boards I thought I'd post a couple of pics the wife took to see if anyone had any ideas.

It has been great having him here and it will be sad to see him leave TBH.  Even though that does mean I get my half of the bed back again.  :D

My daughter has tucked him up in bed in this one.  ::) :D

I'm back!!

That's what we were thinking.  Any ideas what he could be mixed with?

Definitely some greyhound/whippet in that pooch's blood. That would explain the temperament. Greyhounds apparently make good pets for that very reason, though they are prone to chasing down smaller animals, which is why greyhounds may not be the best choice if you have cats running around.

Probably not purebred (but you never know). A pic of it standing up would help ID (racing hounds have a weird, curvy posture). If it IS a mutt, the greyhound genes don't seem that "diluted."

I'll try and take some better pics tomorrow.  I only stuck them ones on as my wife had them to hand.

He does try to chase small animals, but if you grumble at him he stops dead and then will walk by without any problems.  He is a bit of a wally, but he is very obedient.  :D

Definitely Greyhound/Whippet in there, as all have said.

How tall is he?

It looks like the mix is possibly with a hound of some sort, like a fox hound or beagle, possibly.

I'll take some pictures later of him standing next to something to get an idea of how tall he is.

Taking a ruff guesstimate based on the high chair in the pictures I would have went for a greyhound with a touch of beagle given the shape of those ears
Great dog a friend of mine helps out a retired racing greyhound charity she says they are lazy beggars who will chase a ball for ten minutes then spend the rest of the day sleeping on the couch

Greyhounds do have ears like that, but are often cropped to reduce drag on racing dogs.  The best way to tell for sure if it's a "real" greyhound and not a mix is by the hindquarters.  The haunches on a greyhound are disproportionately larger than any other part of the dog because that's where the power and speed come from.  When a dog runs, the front legs really only serve to steer the animal and keeps it's face from hitting the ground.  A greyhound's rump will be large and hard as a rock.

There are three breeds built like that- the Greyhound, Italian Greyhound and the Whippet.  The standard Greyhound is the biggest, the Whippet is the medium version and the Italian is the smallest of the three, so judging by the pics I'd say he's probably a standard, and very likely pure bred.  Not all Greyhounds are racers, so that's why he may not look entirely like the ones you see pictures of.  How many of us look like the perfect example of our species? :P

It is possible that some other breed snuck into the woodshed, but that isn't too likely.  If there was, I'd have to guess a shepherd or maybe a lab, but I'd lay odds against it.

Looks like a good dog though!  When are you getting yours? :P

I'd love to get one, but with 2 kids ( and hopefully another one day) and the shoe box house I live in it's just not practical.

The benefits of that one are that you don't have to walk it, scoop after it, endure its horrific outgassing, or sweep up bales of fur.
All that said, there's not much use in cuddling with it on the couch, and you won't get too many licks on the cheek when you come home.

Plus I doubt it will take a chunk out of a home invader!

All you'd have to do is replace the purple flowers with some Venus Fly Traps, and you're set for chunk taking goodness. That is if the invader is willing to stand and wait for five minutes while the trap shuts.
