This is where it would be nice to be able to bookmark certain post #'s in addition to just the entire thread.

I bookmark them on my computer by clicking on the post title and then bookmarking it in my browser.

Thanks for the info, Greg, it will be useful once we start the rehaul of the multitool wiki. That project scares me though. :ahhh

Awesome!  And the Cult of the Flicky gains another initiate!  What do you think of it so far?  If you're not annoying the crap out of your wife and co-workers with the constant flicking open of the pliers, you're not doing it right......  >:D

I do rather enjoy the flicking, but haven't annoyed anyone yet ;)  My wife actually thought it was neat the the pliers flick out.  It's a bit stiff though, so I hope some fiddling will loosen it.  I will probably oil it at work next week as well.  That's my only complaint so far.  It does make opening the handles a bit uncomfortable with the tool edges right in the position where my fingers rest to open them.  However, due to that design, the grip is very comfortable for squeezing the pliers, so overall, not that big of a deal considering I don't use my MTs much.

I just picked up a Diesel, only because I did not have one, and I have never seen one in person! Looks like a nice tool, but I wonder why Gerber makes this when it is pretty much a MP600 with a slightly different look to it. What am I missing??

Not a lot really. My hunch is that they'd wanted it to replace the 600, but the people don't want the 600 replaced

You do gain a woodsaw and a can opener that's good for pokey/gougey jobs. I also quite like the knife blade and scissors too. I never saw the need for a MP600, as I didn't consider it was much of a step up from the MP400, although I do quite like the Diesel and was actually carrying mine today. Other than the DEsTroyer mod, I still don't own a 600 and am quite satisfied with the Diesel

Just picked as-new 5th gen blunt-nose Multi Plier on the Bay (the one with rivets instead of screws on sliders, which predated 1st gen MP600) for $19 shipped...absolutely stoked!

These supposedly belong to '96-'98 era, yay!

Now the wait begins ;)

I know that feeling. Been checking the mail 3 or 4 times today, because there should be an MP600 on the way, from eBay. I've spent all weekend hoping it would arrive today and now I'll spend all day tomorrow hoping it'll arrive tomorrow; it's terrible! Can't wait...

Not only my latest, but also my first Gerber-tool just arrived, less than an hour ago; MP600 Bluntnose, stainless steel.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem as if the previous owner cared much for this tool... All tools seems stiff, the PE blade can't even cut gutted paracord and the pliers almost require two hands to open, when squeezed all in. And then there's this...

These marks seems like pretty bad rust-attacks (I haven't tried to clean anything yet) and there's specks of surface-rust on most tools as well.
What bothers the most so far, is the fact that when the pliers are all closed in, as in the above picture, I practically have to grab each handle and pull them apart, with quite a bit of force, but as soon as they're free, they move without problems; until I close them again. Is this normal for the MP600 or could it be the cause of rust and dirt in the pivot?
Also, what would you recommend as the "proper" method, of cleaning such a tool? My initial toughts were to clean it in warm water, lubricate every moving part with WD40, let it be for some time, remove any excess WD40 and then give it some proper oil.

Last, but not least... A few more pictures. :D

WD40 and steel wool maybe  ???

I do hope you're able to recover it. That tool should have a bit of life left in it.

Aye, thats what i would do. If needed several times the "washout" with the WD-40.

Regarding the rust - if you want fast results: steelwool and oil/WD-40, or if you have some of the abrasive pads (pure, without any detergent). If you have more time try some citric acid from the supermarket (only a few cents), set it up with hot water and put the tool in.

Make the rust deleting thing first - after that start with the warm soapy water, ......
Have fun.

Bye,
Michael

Just soak the entire tool in the acid-solution for a few hours? Think I might have some, somewhere... My main concern about that, is the locking tabs - everything is metal, except for those two plastic tabs. I was considering using Autosol/chrome polish, but I'm afraid that would ruin the matte finish.

It´s a free available acid, used in kitchens - and the most acid resistant stuff is made from plastic. I wouldn´t worry, but off course i can´t give any guarantee for the plastic Gerber used.

If you don´t feel comfortable with dunkin it, tie it on some wire at the plastic end, and hang it in the fluid as deep that it doesn´t touch the plastic.
Have fun.

Bye,
Michael

Well, I'm definitely gonna take a look around for it later. If I can't find any, I'll just try and clean it with water and WD40 and see if I can scrub it off - it might just be dirt and surface rust. Hopefully...

While I'm certainly no BG fan I have had a good play with this MT and I do think it's a good one.  I was happily surprised by just how slim that sheath is as well.  Well worth getting if the price is right IMO. :tu:

I have one too, and have developed quite a soft spot for it. I wouldn't consider it the most heavy duty tool I have by a long way, but it has proved very useful on a number of (non-survival) situations
