And Bob has an excellent eye. I think Loki has uncovered a new (to me, at least) variant on the version 1 Mr Pinchy    .  All 4 of my v1s ( FPR and non-FPR) have the missing cut-outs and mismatched nail nicks the same as Bob's.

Yet another variant to keep an eye out for [sigh .....]

And found :D  - sooner than I thought AND cheaper too, bonus !   :tu:

And today I got a 4th variant of the Version 1 Mr Pinchy !!  From looking at photos I think some MTo members have this variant but they haven't noticed the difference (yet)   ;)

So now there are (at least)

V1.0  FPR (First Production Run marking) with only 1 cut-out per handle
( nail nicks on the wrong side of the blades and in the wrong place anyway )

V1.1  (standard production - no FPR marking) with only 1 cut-out per handle
(  nail nicks on the wrong side of the blades and in the wrong place anyway )

V1.2  (standard production - no FPR marking) with only 1 cut-out per handle
( nail nicks on the right side of the blades and in the correct place )

V1.3  (standard production - no FPR marking) with 2 cut-outs per handle
( nail nicks on the right side of the blades and in the correct place )

So, any advance on 4 variants ?   :pok:

(these early Mr Pinchy's are getting a bit like early PSTs with all the different variants - except they are MUCH cheaper to buy  :D  )

I know there is one, bu I can´t find the thread listing the Mr. Pinchy variants - I´m trying to date my 2 and the Fiskars Pinchy I got.
Oh, I hacve to say something on topic, too! The last Gerbert I got was a Strata I received in a trade.
It now resides in a Skinth P3 together with an Olight  I3 and an Pilot G2 Mini Pen as my Grab and Go for teh day (they are rare, but they do occur) when I don´t carry my MP 600.

Is this the one you are looking for?

Thank you!
It´s one of the threads I do remember. I am not sure, but I think there was oen showing the variants in comparison pics and a description of the evolution of teh Multiplier.
But I don´t mind browsing old Gerber threads - Worst that can happen is that I browse eBay afterwards...

Got another Mr Pinchy in the post today. Tried finding the thread Bob did on Mr Pinchy versions. Any chance of having it as a sticky?

That looks like a version 4 Mr Pinchy to me (round screws on the pliers, round nuts on the handles and a file, not an awl).  If it is the early series it will likely have "US PATENT NO, 5142721/5142844" stamped on the handles, if it is the later series it will have US  5142721, PATENT 5212844, PAT PEND" .

Cheers Greg! It's the later 5142721/5212844.
Just checked my other two one has patent pending. The other has just 5142721. Both have the awl. The only difference I can see in the older two, is that the pat pending one has gerber written in bubble letters, the other one is written with single line letters like my mp400 and mp600.

:D  Like I originally said in the other thread,  ;) congrats!  The MP400 Compact Sport is one of my absolute favorite tools.  It actually sees more carry time than my beloved MP600's.  Be sure to let us know what you think of it.  :tu:

Very true.  When I first joined I can only think of one chap (Roadie) who regularly carried a MP600.  I'm sure there must have been more, but certainly not nearly as many fans as there are at the moment.

I'm guessing Leatherman's decline in quality and customer service could have played some role in that...

TBH I don't really know.  I suspect Leatherman's QC has been about the same for a few years now, it's just people's willingness to talk about it that might have changed.

I put Gerber's rise in popularity down to the fact we are all a bunch of enablers who can't resist persuading others that our latest MT is the greatest thing since sliced bread. :D  The fact that there really are a good few Gerber's worth owning helps a little too. ;)

It also seems Gerber hasn't helped themselves in the cause very much. With their Bear Grylls line of products and various knives they produce of such shotty quality, people have heard and experienced a lot of negatives with the company.

Gerber has a much wider range of products than does Leatherman. I've seen them come and go in various camping/fishing stores. Such as Gander Mt. I remember when our local Ganders had an entire shelf of Gerber products and more recently, they're all gone. Why don't they sell them anymore? Were they not good sellers or not profitable for the store?

Good point Gareth.  People are more willing to call companies out on their failings in different aspects.  You see it more and more.

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking that JD
Whilst no one denies the precision leathermans have, I personally find that Gerber's  no nonsense approach in their MP range, some may even use the word crude - non the less it has an unmistakable charm  that I find utterly addictive.

The mp design is truly  iconic in my view.  I for one salute Gerber for their commitment.

Not sure if that counts in this thread, but .....

In the last months i´ve bought 3 things from Gerber:

- a Gerber Remix

- a Gerber Ripstop

- a Gerber Suspension

The 2 knifes were originally bought as display pieces, as i´m a prop-collector and they were used in the movie "Prometheus". Additional i think both are really good looking knifes. The Remix (with partial serrated blade) also made it´s way from display to my most used edc knife, and the Ripstop is so tiny and cute, no sharp edges, low profile clip - would be perfect if a really small edc-knife would be wanted/needed.

The Suspension may not be the most rugged MT out there, but as always it comes down for what it´s used. I gifted it to a friend who is electrician by trade, and it´s perfect for him. Long and pointy pliers, self opening, anvil type wire cutter ... a short serrated blade to open packages, a short plain blade to cut insulation (every electrician i know seems alway to use the first handlesided 2-3cm of a blade only) ... the short saw is enough to make little cutouts for in and out in plastic cable channels .

It may not be made from the most best material (but i don´t think he will break the pliers), and for sure it´s not "the only needed tool after a nuclear breakdown to survive the coming zombie apocalypse" - but it´s completly fine for the kind of work he uses it for, and also for the light duty in and around a household, if the user doesn´t tries to overstress it in a stupidly way.
Have fun.

Bye,
Michael
