Bruised nails?
on: May 15, 2008, 01:14:56 AM
Well, I was getting out of my truck today and I slammed the door on my thumb. ( don't ask me how I did it!) It is all black and blue and I fear losing my nail. I remember it happening in High School once and my nails were never the same. Anyone have any suggestions?

I was thinking about sticking a hot pin in there to relieve pressure. But, I am not so sure that is the best thing to do!

Not much you can do. If you stick a pin in there you risk getting an infection that will screw up the new nail coming in.

Is there a doctor in the house (or on the board)?

I'd see a doctor if it doesn't look any different, or there's still pain in a few days.

I slammed my finger in a metal door once when I was a kid and my finger didn't get bruised...The nail cut into the skin and it looked like my finger exploded!  Just like any other wound I kept it clean, it healed, and today I coulden't even tell you which finger it was!

If you can find it, get some witch hazel to soak your thumb in.

You should be able to get it at a pharmacy. I smashed my thumb in a car door years ago and it helped a lot.

Do you feel pressure inside? Is it constantly painful? If so go to ER and let them do it. I got smashed on my big toe when I was a kid and had to do it to relieve pressure and everything healed up fine.

Since I've used witch hazel does that mean I'm old?

I still use witch hazel! :D

I have to admit that when I get a blood pocket under the nail, I use an Exacto knife (incredibly sharp means less pressure in cutting) and slowly rotate it like a drill to put a small hole into the nail, releasing the blood and the pressure. I then put bacitracin or other antibiotic into the hole. I've never had an infection, but try at your own risk. Good luck, Bill.

I've always heard to get a pin red hot and poke through. If it's that hot it won't have any bacteria on it.

I guess so.  I've used witch hazel my whole life and I'm 36.

I don't feel old though, except for my ankle, and that's on the mend.

I've always used a hot, sharp pin to puncture through the nail and relieve the pressure.

Lucky dog. I'm 36 too but I feel a LOT older than that. Although I act immature so that makes up for it.  :D
