Small UK legal folder
on: December 07, 2013, 11:44:18 PM
I'm thinking of a UK legal folder....not a traditional slippie,not a SAK .

I like the look of the Squeak and the Pingo, but they are pricey. Oh,and it should be as sheeple friendly as possible too

What do you think?

The CRKT Edgie doesn't really count as small, but the sheepsfoot blade is a lot more neutral looking than many other OHO slippies.  My personal favourite is the Byrd Tern, though again it's not exactly small or friendly looking to the average joe.  The Grasshopper is small enough to be people friendly, is cheap and non-traditional.  Only real issue is that it's not the easiest OHO I've ever used.

ATM my only UK 'legal' EDC dedicated folder is a Byrd tern, but I agree with Gareth they aren't very friendly looking to most. which is a shame. specially as it's design brilliant as it is, was done with a UK market in mind
I've said before on other threads I really wouldn't want a young and keen 'plod' to find it in my pocket, and then have to debate the facts of law. I doubt a locking blade would cause me much more trouble. Maybe a true multitool (with locking blades) would get under the 'radar' with more ease ? I'm not talking 'Wave' or 'Wingman'. OHO screams "flick knife" :o to a lot of non-knife folks in my experience but many wouldn't see much difference between Vic spirit and Vic Farmer as far as 'locking' goes
I know, because we've talked about it before Kirky, that you're not a Tern fan. So I'm not going to be much help (I know that doesn't make much of a change )

How about a Svord Peasant Mini with plastic handles?
Its a traditional design thoug, but it is OH opening, and looks pretty sheeple friendly.

Edit:
Or how about a SRM H02? I dont own one, but it looks decent. And SRM makes great knives.

I really liked the drop point blue serrated ukpk I had.

I highly recommend you try a cheap ukpk.

you can't beat it for the price.

and they come in lots of fun colors.  8)

I was just thinking of the mini Svord as well, bright colours always make thinks look more friendly.

I SHOULD have been thinking of the H02, given that I actually own one.  It is a nice knife, but there is nothing about it that gets me really excited.  The fact that I forgot about it might tell you something.  Don't let my lack of enthusiasm put you off though, they really are well made knives.

The Squeak is pretty capable and feels great in the hand :) Plus the edge lasts and lasts.

The Svord minis a great working knife for the money, and its quite addictive to play with. Edge doesn't last as long as a sak though.

The Pingo would be my first pick. It just works so well. Many don't like the look of the handle and blade shape, but once it's in your hands, it great.

Note - Pingo does not come with a thumb stud, that was added after purchase to enable OHO, ironic I know as it was designed to be 2HO.

Second I would go for squeak or Nano. Both are good, but the Nano again looks real odd, but works very well and cuts like a much bigger knife than it is.

You might also like the subcom, although a great design and groundbreaking it now seems a little dated by the others.

SRM has a few cheap ones, apart from the H02.
I know you do not want a traditional one, but still Rough Rider and the Buck Chinese line may be worth a look too. Some are quirky enough not to be totally traditional.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions...

Byrd Tern: had one, like it better than UKPKs,as it's not dis-similar,just at a much better price, but I did end up trading it off many moons ago.

UKPK: have a Rescue one...awesome blade, soft back spring

Boker Subcom and Nano: had both,in Thier 42 non locking models. Couldn't get on with the Aus8 blade on the Subcom, and despite :drool:ing over the Nano for ages before buying one,I just could not get along with it...carried it twice, sold it!

Svords are a good call, and it have both a Mini, and a modded Peasent, but I do wonder if the extended spine would interfere with pocket carry? I tend to think of them as a camping knife rather than a work/urban EDC. Mind you,I've never edc'd it...

Love the Edgie,have one

Aside from Mike LOTS,not much love for the Squeak... That's surprised me!

Any other ideas?

I've only seen the Squeak in real life once, one that belonged to a friend of mine.  Sadly the backspring broke on it after about a year of use and carry.  I believe he got it sent back and replaced, but it doesn't inspire confidence.  Of course one example doesn't make for a trend so this could have just been bad luck.

I'm still not convinced any Spyderholed knife is ever going to be totally friendly looking, no matter how small.

Seems to use the same retention-system as the Svords do, doesn't it? I'm not sure how people-friendly these are, though... Sort of reminds me of chinese maffia like things

I really like the look of the Pingo, I have a bit of a thing for weird-shaped blades, I think...

There are locking and 42 (non locking) types of both knives. The two in the photos are the 42 non locking type, thus UK legal EDC. :)
