DLC coated Rebar
on: December 14, 2013, 11:13:39 AM
I don't know what other people do with their Rebar after they have stolen the pliers from the poor little MT to rebuild their Wave.
I had the same problem and at first I was thinking about leaving it as is for spare parts, but I like the Rebar and so I decided to rebuild the Rebar with some extras.

So, here we go.......after I disassembled the Rebar I polished the handles and coated them with a nice black DLC. In one pic you can see the handles on a special holder with stainless steel wire before the parts go into the coating machine.

The screws and the pivots didn't look that good after I disassembled the Rebar so I asked a friend if he could make me some new ones with hexagonal heads for easy assembly and disassembly.
The pliers for the Rebar are now the pliers from the Wave and I decided to make me a blunt nose Rebar because sometimes I need blunt nose pliers more than the normal needle nose pliers.

Yesterday I polished the blades and tools from the Rebar and coated them with DLC, the result is really great.
But I have to stop for now because I have to wait for the pliers and the new screws, when they arrive I have to coat them before I can assemble the Rebar again. So....you and I have to wait till mid of january but I hope you continue to stay tuned :(

To be continued...........

BTW, how wear resistant is DLC on the blades? With a tool as the Rebar where the blades/tools rub against each other?

"Applications of DLC typically utilize the ability of the material to reduce abrasive wear."

I think it will work better than without coating, we will see when I assembled the Rebar :)

Whats your shipping address, I'm sure there are a lot of people here that will want there tools coated, just expect boxes and boxes of tools, if you do post your address.

Today the other parts arrived, now I only have to coat them with DLC after my holidays and assemble the Rebar.
The screws, pivots and spacers look great and I like the new look of the Wave pliers.

Cool. 8)

What size are those screws. I would have personally cut a straight notch in them so I could adjust the tightness of them on the go with a SAK bottle opener/screwdriver if needed. :)

Looking forward to seeing this one finished. :salute:

Hmmm, wonder how an alox 58mm would look/work coated all in that?

@jrp316
Imagine a Victorinox "Black Ice" with black Alox handles, that is how it would look because the Black Ice Series is DLC coated too.

@enki_ck
great idea with those notches :tu:
The diameter of the pivots is 4,72mm, the head is 7mm and the screws are 3mm.

@Teletin - I like that idea. An all DLC coated 58mm. Scales, liners, tools, springs, the whole lot.

Today I have coated the pliers for my Rebar.....nice :D
But I`ve decided not to use Ceracote for the handles, I will make a different surface on the handles and coat them with DLC again :)
More to see next week :tu:

Oh, my. :drool:

That looks excellent. :2tu:

BTW, why are you DLC coating the handles again? Was there a problem with the initial coating?
