Any recommendations on a compass?
on: May 25, 2008, 11:49:12 AM
Whilst on holiday, there were a few times when a compass would have been really handy, so I have decided to go get one.

As I know nothing about them, is there anything I should be looking out for?

Thanks

Benner
I'm back!!

Silva make good affordable compasses, and if you're not planning on going on a major expedition a simple cheaper one will work fine :)

Unless you're doing some serious orienteering, a basic model will do fine.  Anything inexpensive from Brunton, Silva, or Suunto should work for ya.  I keep a luminous Suunto Clipper on my watchband for EDC and it's always worked fine to find my bearings.   :D

Thanks for the suggestions guys.  Any thought's on this one that Marc sells https://edcdepot.com/merchantmanager/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=61&products_id=234?  I like the idea of the metal casing and it's small size.

I've got the Marbles equivalent, and it's very robust :), but it's not as accurate as a Silva or Suunto :-\

I actually like the look of these http://www.pyser-sgi.com/productdetail.asp?ProductID=1573.  They seem pretty popular, anyone here got one?

They are actually made in a factory opposite to my last place of work.  :)  Kinda expensive though.  :-\

Yeah they are expensive, and are really only for last resort use by special forces, there no where near accurate enough in close terrain :(

By the way there made small and water tight so you can swallow them and 'retrieve' them later :D

Nice!  :D

I am not looking for something super accurate, just something real small a robust that will give me a good general idea of where north is.

I am thinking a button compass is the way to go, or something small like the tru-nord one.

No offence and I don't mean to be patronising, but is button a good idea with the nipper's ???, how about a watch mounted one instead ???

Be as patronising as you like mate.  :)  Maybe slightly larger would be a bit better then. :-\  Say 20mm+ ???

I do like the look of that one Stormdrane mentioned.

Ideally I'd like a metal cased one, but they seem pretty limited.

Well metal cased one's are pretty rare and expensive too, and there usually all prismatic too, which is a bit too speciallized for your need's, but they do look the business though

I use the clear, flat Silva acrylic model. It's clear and its scales are nice for a map, doesn't take up much space and supposedly won't freeze up in reasonable cold. It's very good, but I'm definitely not married to it as I'm not fond of plastic construction. But man, that Bezard is beautiful!  I have a Japanese lensatic, but that Bezard is nearly erotic.
