Any waterproof and unrustable pen cartridges?
on: March 18, 2014, 11:27:20 PM
I wanted to know if there were any ink cartridges that don't have rust-able metals on them.  For example the Fisher space ones say they can write underwater, but they have metallic stuff all over them so you would have to take apart the pen and dry everything if you did get it wet or in s.a.l.t.w.a.t.e.r.

Is there a pressurized cartridge that is made of plastic with the tip being some type of alloy that doesn't rust?

edit: why does s.a.l.t.w.a.t.e.r. without periods become salsmurfer?

Fisher cartridges are pretty good in my experience.  I carry a Fisher Bullet regularly (and have for years), and simply wash it in the sink with soap and water if it gets dirty or greasy.  I usually dry the outside of the pen, but don't bother to take it apart and dry the insides.  This has never been a problem yet, although I'm not sure how it would do with extended exposure to sea water.

This is because the forum software is programmed to replace certain potentially offensive words with the word "smurf", and the four letters it removed from the word above spell a slang reference to a portion of the female anatomy.

I live in one of the harshest environments on the planet with regards to rust, and that has been well documented here with numerous photos in the past.  I carry a Fisher Bullet every day at work and I have never had a rust issue with it.  It is banged up, dented and the cap no longer comes off the main body of the pen (stuck open) but it has never shown any sign of rust.

Because our naughty words filter replaces the t.wat part of it with smurf. :D There are a few such words.

do you guys know what the metallic stuff on the Fisher space pen cartridges is made from?

Because I'm looking for a pen that will hold up to spending large amounts of time in salt water.

I have the Japanese Space pen (Mitsubishi / Uniball)
http://uniball.com/?mid=351&pid=18

The pen and the mine are plastic except the spring and the tip. And it is a lot cheaper than a fisher SpacePen. Might be worth a try.

No idea but my job is standing on and around the docks all day and I live literally a stone's throw from the ocean. My pen is completely rust free.

It has been literally put away wet for the last few years and doesn't show a hint of rust.

The ball is tungsten carbide.  The cartridge body looks like maybe brass, but I'm not sure.

Looks like Amazon has the basic chrome Fisher Bullet for less than $15 right now, so if you try it but it ends up getting destroyed, you won't be out too much money.

I can recommend those, too. I use them at work and at the desk when there is achance a Space Pen might get lost or permanently borrowed.
And I find them much more comfortable for extended writing.

In case it helps any, here is a photo I took of my Fisher Bullet a few days ago.  I swear, it has not been retouched or cleaned for this photo, this is the way it actually looks.  It has been through everything my Wingman has been through, and more.  The Bullet has been in my work vest, in the next pocket over from the multitool pocket for years while the Wingman was only there for a few months.

If there's a tougher, more reliable pen out there than this one, I have yet to find it.

No worries man- wouldn't be much of a forum if we didn't share photos and experiences, now would it?  :D

Seriously I have beaten the poop out of this pen and with a quick polish it could pass for almost new.... except for the dents where it's been dropped, and the old Palm type stylus which was lost long ago.

I actually have a second one of these and I used to alternate when they ran out of ink, but this one has been going solo for 3-4 years now.

Very cool :)

My plan was to use the Madplumbarian technique.  He heat shrink-ed a Space pen cartridge to a cotter pin I believe.

I was thinking I would cut down a titanium chopstick or any piece of titanium and then heat shrink a space cartridge to it too :)

If the Fisher Bullet is too large and heavy for your needs, you could try a Fisher Stowaway.
