Might take some time...
on: May 29, 2014, 06:08:41 PM
Earlier today, I remembered that I had an old pocketknife lying around, that's never looked at it's best, in the time I've had it. I can't remember exactly how I got it; either it was something that "mysteriously" disappeared from my dads tool-box and went into my pocket or he actually gave it to me, due to it's tormented look.

Even back then, it's blades were more black and brown from rust and dirt, then they actually looked like steel. That, and the fact that the small blade was scaringly sharp, in the mind of small child, is the earliest memories I have of this knife. For some reason, I've never gotten rid of it, even though my interest for knives, have been very low for the last 10 years.

Anyhow, I found it again and decided to start shining it up, so it actually looks like something that can be used. After about 15-20 minutes of polishing and cleaning the larger blade, I actually found out that it's a Boker!  :o

As you can see, the blade is still far from pretty. The small blade hasn't been worked on yet; for some reason, that has always been prettier than the large blade. So now, I know what the rest of my day is going to be used on - would be nice to clean up one of my dads old knives and EDC it.

IIRC, Boker doesn't use any kind of date stamps on their products, do they? Would be fun to know, circa, how old it actually is.

Nice old Boker barlow there. :tu:  I have some references bookmarked at home, when I get out of work I'll post the links and maybe we can figure out about when it was made.

Considering the time difference I'll problably be asleep by then, but would be nice if we could work it out. :D At least now I know the name of the model. All this time, I just thought it was some no-name knife; imagine my surprise, when I suddenly saw "Boker" stamped on the blade.

Nice looking pocket knife you got there.  :tu:
Thanks. :D

Just looked at the time... It's 7.47 pm here in Denmark; I must've been cleaning and polishing that knife for at least 2 hours by now, if not 3 hours. So, I decided to call it a day (got work tomorrow) and gave it a quick sharpen and a hefty oiling. That thing problably hasn't been sharpened or oiled for at least 15 years. Now, it gets to sit in a paper towel, so any excess oil can dry off, before I take it with me to work tomorrow. I'll problably continue the cleaning and polishing there; it's so much more fun, when you get paid to do it. :D

jerseydevil, if you'd help me date this knife, I would really appreciate it. I've done some checking on the stamp on the tang of the blade and learned that this particular stamp has been used since the 60's, but that's still alot of time in between...

My very first knife was very similar to that, though it lacked the small blade of yours.  Sadly mine is long lost, but I look forward to seeing the ongoing clean-up. :tu:
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

My apologies, for not having uploaded any finished pictures yet. When I started, I thought it was only gonna take me an hour or so. After 3 hours, I figured I might as well just half an hour a day and see when I was satisfied. I'm closing in on at that point right now; hopefully, there'll be pics later tonight. (Tonight, meaning within the next 4-5 hours)

Well, not quite happy with it yet, but I'm pretty sure this is as good as the blades are gonna get, with what I have at my disposal.

Unfortunately, the scales doesn't look so good anymore; not sure what I can do about this, but it only shows in a certain light.

I've managed to get a better picture of the Boker-stamp at the tang of the main blade. As stated earlier, as far as I can tell, this particular stamp has been used since the 60's and on.

It isn't perfect, but up close you can get a decent reflection of the main blade.

The small blade however, is a bit more tricky - at least when trying to take pictures of it...

I'm pretty sure that it isn't normal for the main blade to be this far against the spacer/liner, when closed?

And last, but not least, one more picture of the scuffed scales.

Oddly enough, the "shiny" part of the scale, is only on that side - I'm guessing it once looked like that, all over the handle...

All in all, I'm pretty satisfied, considering how rusty and gunked up it was, when I began. Mind you, when I started, the main blade was even worse, than the small blade is, in the pictures in the first post.
Now I just gotta decide, whether to use it as an EDC or if it's gonna be on a shelf somewhere...

EDIT: I will try and getter better pictures tomorrow, in natural light. The only light I had for these pictures, was the light from my screen and some LED-strips.

Looking good so far to me.  :tu:  I just got an older Barlow last week from Sazabi that needs a bit of TLC to get it ready for pocket time......
