I've been carrying a tinker for 20+ years, and it wasn't until I made these scales that I realized that one end of the knife is bigger than the other end!

No, the cross is an inlay, done with polymer clay.

Oh nice. I must try that - the difference it makes is quite dramatic.

Did you use a chisel to cut the cross, and if so, what size was it?

I cut out the cross with a scroll saw.  I got the idea from this scroll-saw video.
