I had a NIB Trail Guide no one seemed interested in, so I dismantled it along with a Champion and made it interesting  :) . On a related note, it is also for sale- I am not a Scientist fanatic myself, but more and more I hear people looking for them unable to find one high or low, so I'll happily pass it on to a happy loving home  .

What wood is that, and what kind of stain/finish did you use?

I called it The Inspecting Golfer ;)

When I'm asked to make a mod for someone else I always use new or mint parts (unless vintage bits are required) but when building for myself to play with "good used" will suffice and if you look at the back, the liners give this away.

(Image removed from quote.)

Why did I make it?  Well it was part of my ongoing experimentation to find the ideal IT SAK.  This isn't it but its a pretty good tool combination, even if I say so myself :D

(Image removed from quote.)

stop posting saks you  :twak: thats another one i like  >:(

What wood is that, and what kind of stain/finish did you use?

Sorry for my late reply, porteiro. It's just a piece of old wood i found in the woodshed. I was going to pay a visit to one of the local woodworkers and get some qaulity wood, but it was a weekend when i started. I used watercolors to paint the wood, a mixture of red, black and orange to be exact and sanded it down a bit to give it a nice looking texture. As for the finish, it's a clear matt varnish spray, but unfortunately i used too many layers, so a week or so ago I removed the scales, sanded them again and only used two layers of varnish. Looks much better now. :)

Thanks, guys! If it wasn't for this thread, I probably wouldn't start making my own scales.

This is my recycled chip point Trail Guide with pocket clip. I made this SAK all out of extra parts. I refinished + scales they were badly mangled. The pocket clip screws ware salvaged from a 5.00 folding box cutter. I reshaped the blade just for the heck of it.

Mike, have you tapped the liner or is that clip just attached to the scale?

The clip is attached to to the scale. I make the holes in the scales a little small and take my time making the threads then i counter sink the back side of the holes. I attach the clip using J-B Weld under the clip, on the threads and on the counter sunk areas on the back of the holes. The clip is very sturdy.

Let us know how it holds up day to day.  I'd be a bit paranoid about not sinking the screws into the liner but that's just me :)

I'm actually considering a serrated main blade for my own 84mm knife after doing that for Dennis.  Its a small blade and serrations give you that bit more to work with.
