Thx, I figured out, that protecting the scales with electrical tape gives you very good hints where you actually peen, even if you have a bigger hammer.

One of the most important advantages of exposed rivets on wood scales is:
The knife is serviceable.

I wasn't happy with the snap of the scissors of my EDC, a custom 84mm golfer (with hook).

old version:

So i drilled the rivets, disassembled the knife, did some grinding on the custom spring and reassembled it.

Another thing is regarding exposed rivets. If you grind them down to the level of the wood, then the tools (and the knife itself) may become shaky.

To make it more stable I produced some decent mushrooms.

I have found that cutting a slight countersink in the wooden scales before peening allows you to sand the pins off flush and still have them hold tight.

That's practicable. I thought about that idea too, but disregarded it, since i wanted to have those mushrooms. Your way gives an option for different wishes. And in both cases you may drill it again.

How is the longterm experience? I expect mushrooms to be more tighter than countersunk and flat sanded rivets. But i think your option is maybe tight enough, too. But even for heavy duty jobs?

Hank,
I haven't done much peining yet and some of it looks like yours with the raised mushroom heads
I found the edges are very sharp and would soon cut holes in my pockets, how do yours feel?

I might need a bigger hammer?

My rivets are dull (not sharp) at the side and like a mirror from above.... But i cheat. :)

I have custom sandpaper for my proxxon. From 280 - 1000 grit.

And believe me: 1000 grit sandpaper@20.000rpm can create mirror surfaces on metal.

For the rivets I use 600grit@5.000rpm

most of the scales I have done with flat/csk pins have been on 1 or 2 layer SAKs. I would probably go with mushroom heads on thicker knives.

WOW! That is fantastic! Congrats on a beauty there.   :tu:

Is the texture applied to the scales by hand?

Yes, an excellent build. I really like G10 in security orange and thought several times about replacing my Hunter scales (european dual grip orange) against such G10.

You didn't glue the scales to the outer liners?
How is the grip compared to a dual grip version? Is it a kind of slippy when its getting wet?
Have you drilled every hole to 3,2mm? (Especially the inner pins)

What I like most: This knife can be repaired or cleaned easily. A good choice for camping.

Thanks for the compliments.

The scales are not glued, they are only screwed. Each tool is drilled to 3,2mm. Inox steel tube with convulsion in each hole. All screwed together.
I want to add a clip and replace the aluminium plates for inox.

The texture was made by microtools Dremel.

Bought a Swiss Champ off eBay. Was pretty cheap, but had a few problems.
Broken Awl, bent Corkscrew, very used looking blades and everything was very stiff to open.

Pulled it apart along with a Spartan of the same age (grooved Corkscrew, sewing eye Awl, same tang stamps) that was a typical "carried a lot, used a little" knife as a donor for the needed parts.

I had a pair of Camel bone blanks sitting around so I made up a pair of "Jigged and Flamed" scales to fit (including Pen slot).

The old workhorse looks a bit better now...

Restored an old knife AND individual scales AND made Exposed rivets AND tools inside the scales. I'm deeply impressed. Good work!  :tu:

And here are pics of my Alox mod.  Not sure what I'm going to call this one as it's a bit more difficult.  It started off as a Pioneer, but basically became an Electrician with pliers and a phillips driver added.  So maybe...ElectroMechanic, or ElectroMechaneer, or something simple like The Beast or MechaBeast...kinda like that one...  Any suggestions?
