Thanks! Although I do like the opener layer and don't find it antiquated...
So, ComboTool loves the opener layer...

Bladeless Cybertool Lite.

So, ComboTool loves the opener layer...
 I also like having ability to open a can and pop the cap off a glass soda bottle...or a beer bottle.

I rummaged through my entire kitchen, pantry, apocalypse storage, and couldn't find a single tin of food or anything without a pull tab. Seems like merrie olde Europe has outphased those traditional tins/cans completely. And if I ever buy a party size can of pickles, I have a real opener in my drawer. Used last when my youngest graduated, so that's several years.

Then I have this way cool old Coke opener bolted on my patio for beverages. Problem is, NOTHING comes in glass bottles anymore. Totally gone, except for some obscure hipster breweries' products that I don't buy, and the once-a-month imported Sol or a Corona beer to go with tacos.

Yet, every single multitool and SAK comes with openers. For me at least, a pretty useless layer of steel that could be yeeted or replaced. But if they work for you, rock on! Many SAKs have a near perfect set if tools with or without openers.

:like: Yet my favorite sodas and beers all come in glass bottles. I do my very best to stick with cane sugar and avoid the high-fructose corn syrup malarkey found in American soda. And please don't get me started on artificial sweeteners...

A recent custom SAK I put together.
I’m calling it the Companion Slim Plus
I really liked the new Companion Slim Alox knife but I really missed two things; the plus scales and the key ring. The plus scales mostly for the pen and the key ring just so I can use a suspension pocket clip.

I've been carrying different single bladed knife in addition to this. Right now it’s the OneFold. Being just two layers this knife is very low profile. I've carried them both together in one pocket and also split them between both front pockets. I find it a great solution for me because I really am a minimalist most of the time and cannot stand having things in my pockets.

The backside tools are a Philips and small screwdriver. I just thought they might be a more interesting combination of tools than the corkscrew and awl.

Nice toolset! How did you get the Phillips to fit on the scissor backspring? Every time I've tried to replace the hook by another tool it failed, either because the "hump" prevents the tool from closing (and damages it if it's a sharp tool like the awl) or because the pivot hole is placed differently and this compromises the snap.

In-line awl is one of my favorite mods. Surprising how well it works as a package opener.

Me too Pa. I wish it was a standard feature on the 91mm range instead of the small blade

Been a while since I've done some modding but have been on a big two layer, one blade, no opening layer kick at the minute (I picked up an Enginner which started it all) and wanted something with a light. So I have a Spartan lite, opening layer delete, small blade swap out of nail file from a Companion that I'm calling the Companion lite light. With the leftover bits from the Companion I made a celador Companion slim, mostly just to use up the parts but will probably take this into the office with me as a bladeless option.

As ever, lots of learning (and re-learning) - the biggest takeaway from this is to not try re-using pins as it makes re-assembly 1000 times harder.

Thanks mate, it came out better than expected to be honest - I would say it might be better to use the blade layer spring as the box opener sits kind of low behind the scissor and the action on it isn't great, but I didn't want to give up the keyring loop so a compromise had to be made.

I've done a similar leftover parts build which was just a bottle/can opener with a corkscrew on the back which I keep in with the camping gear which is also pretty fun/useful. It's in with the camping stuff as can opener and corkscrew are probably my 2 most forgotten kitchen bits we end up leaving home without.

Yeah I was wondering if all tools would open/close nicely, mostly because of the differences in layer thickness (corkscrew and openers?) and pivot point locations.
Still pretty cool.

Broke my right (dominant) hand last year in an accident and after 2 surgeries plus some rehab I am finally back in business. This is an explorer companion mod with one hand opening elmax  blade (61 HRC).

Interesting mod, do you have a use for the fish scaler at work?  It’s one SAK tool that I don’t think I’ve ever managed to find a use for.

I used to think like that too, but a friend pointed out its use as a depth gauge and I often use it to mark timber out for cutting - really useful. The 'v' at the end of the scaler holds a pencil tip will.
