CLR to clean my leatherman....
on: June 24, 2014, 10:44:25 AM
Any tips, I soaked my leatherman original supertool in clr for 5 minutes to remove rust, but now it's discolored and has a rough dull finish.

Yikes!  Any pictures?

Rinse it thoroughly in water to remove any lingering CLR, dry it thoroughly, apply WD40 to displace any remaining water.

Realizing this is after the fact but WD40 and a brass brush does a nice job of removing surface rust.

CLR completely strips all oil from whatever it is used on.  It does leave a slight residue, but should disappear with oiling the piece.

CLR is an acid.

I'm not surprised that it damaged the metal.

CLR = CALCIUM LIME & RUST REMOVER

Component CAS# Osha Hazard % by Weight
1. Water 7732-18-5 NO 70-81
2. Lactic Acid 79-33-4 YES 15-20
3. Gluconic Acid 526-95-4 N0 2-4
4. Lauryldimethyl Hydroxysultaine 13197-76-7 N0 1-4
5. Propylene Glycol Normal Butyl Ether 5131-66-8 YES 1-2

You should only use CLR for its intended purpose, cleaning tile and porcelain.

If you want a superior product, with a stellar reputation for removing rust from metal, then you should buy Kroil.

It can possibly be polished to a shiny finish.  I think the simple way to clean an old crusty tool is warm water and soap followed by a good long soak in WD40 or 3and1 oil.  This has always worked for me with all the old very well used tools I have bought.

Let see the tool and we can try to help you.

If CLR is anything like the toilet cleaner I used on my stainless kitchen sink  you will need a drill, pollishing mop and some polishing compound  :salute:
Everything’s adjustable

Green, white, then red rouge with a felt wheel should do the trick.

I've polished my Wave, Old Surge, and a Japanese PST with great results using white, blue, and green compound.  The compound is Porter Cable brand from lows.  I used a dremel and a felt wheel maing sure to not heat the tool much.  I have also recently used Mothers Mag Wheel polish to clean up a Spyderco  tenacious blade with great results.  I just applied some to a rag a wiped and wiped and wiped then wiped it off.  I was going to use the dremel but it came out great so I didn't.    Powernoodle gave me the idea so thanks to him  :salute:

If this is a user then it will come out great tho maybe not perfect.  It certainly wont look factory but it will resist rust better IMO because the smooth finish.  Good luck with the cleaning up.

I had a PST that was pretty much poo poo and what I did was ( thanks to Detron ) put it in a used MRE bag and sprayed the smurf out of it with WD40.   It sat for a week with a few more sprays for good measure.  I then washed and scrubbed it with steel wool 0000 and soap.  It came out very nice after a final soak in 3and1 oil for a day.

I personally prefer a dull finish, not too bright or shiny. It is for this reason I do not polish my multitools. If I had my way, every tool would be black oxide.

My New version Surge is BO and you are very right my friend.  I'm not sure of the members name anymore but he posted his shiny MT and I thought hmmmmm.  Actually there were a few who posted some dreamy highly polished tools.

I've found that Leatherman and Gerber's BO to be top notch. It's practically like having "black steel" as the coating holds up so good; with just the occasional scratch or scuff mark. If LM were to make their mini tools in BO that would be killer (BO Style CS, BO Micra)

Yup,   I know a certain Capt that would be happy to see a BO micra as well.  I want to see a BO Crunch.
