Old thread, but current topic for me.

I'm totally cheesed off with the price of disposable razor blades, so I'm taking the plunge!

This is the one I'm ordering - any thoughts good or bad before I pull the trigger?

Price seems about right and it looks nice, good reviews etc, but it ain't particularly cheap so if anyone has any horror stories I'd be most grateful.....

I used to come here a lot.

I have one, but I just don't trust myself to shave with it.  Especially my neck.

Why would you even want to try?

I remember my father walking out of the bathroom with a few toilet papers stuck to his face...and that was with the 70s era safety razors lol.

You can't pry my Phillips top model Cool Skin electric razor from my dead fingers.

I haven't found an electric shaver that will actually cut me whiskers as opposed to ripping them out so far, so I switched back to blades a few years ago. They are better, but not brilliant, and they cost a fortune.

The only decent shaves I've ever had are at barbers' who use straight razors, so I'm going to give it a go and save some cash along the way with a bit of luck!

It took me forever to find an electric that did the job. Unfortunately, you have to pay a bit for a real good one. The Phillips Cool Skin model that I have is the 7775X. It cuts smooth, has a lotion dispenser built in, and I can shave in the shower. Yeah, I have been known to do both if time is limited before work. I think they now have an 8000 series now. I like mine so much, I am not going to upgrade.

Best of luck with the straight razor.  :salute:

Looks like a great piece of kit mate, if you're serious about it then I say go for it.

I'm very tempted to get something like that for myself.  I currently use a mach 3 and it struggles with my bristles.  I shave every other day - it would be less but I have to look presentable in hospital - so it costs a fair amount.  I get bad razor rash as well, the only time I've ever shaved without getting razor rash is with single blade bics but I hate the whole wasteful one-use approach.

The main problem is using those cutthroats well; I've seen a few guys with some nasty nicks from those things.  If you do get one it would be great to her about your experience with it.

Rich.

Rich, I used to get bad razor burn as well.  You know what cured it?  Not using a mach 3 ::).  I shave with a good old single razor blade.  As you just change the blade there are no big lumps of plastic to throw out and having two sides they actually last quite well.  That all depends on how thick your stubble is though.  Boots sell a cheap handle and pack of blade for about a fiver, a pack of the blades is only a couple of quid.

All that said I'd love to get a good cutthroat, good luck Dave.  :tu:

I have issues with shaving and rashes as well, so maybe that's what I should try as well.

The reason for the burn, as I understand it, is that multi-bladed razors are designed to pull the hair out slightly before the next blade comes along to give a closer cut.  That works well in that the hair effectively gets cut below the level of the skin.  However if you are prone to razor burn/rash then having each and every hair pulled up just isn't going to help and causes the irritation.

Cheers for the advice mate :tu:  I'll have a look for those tomorrow.  It'll be nice not to have razor rash and not be throwing away great big chunks of plastic every time I shave - that's just not something I could live with.

Cheers :D

That is why I use the Cool Skins. They have a built in lotion dispenser that make a huge difference. Likewise, I find that shaving in the shower also helps. I would never do without mine, as I am also very prone to burns and rashes also. It took me ages before I found a model that worked for me.
