When does the challenge start? I'm ready with my Pioneer :)

Ok, ok...I'll do a Pioneer like AZR but....

The legal stuff....

I reserve the right to use my Wenger cigar cutter when I have a cigar and to photograph aforementioned cutter with my cigar for the Cigar Thread....furthermore I reserve the right to trade the minimalist Pioneer for a Wenger SI on Wenger Wed if I so desire...other rights and privileges may be granted if not prohibited by law including drinking, carousing and being loud/obnoxious while carrying the minimalist EDC choice.

You may win the award for the best looking knife in the challenge!

Thank you!!!   :salute:

New to this forum but I'm in as I have been thinking along these lines recently.

Over the last 20 years I have been carrying a Soldier, Recruit and more recently a EvoWood 10.
Minimalist already.

Either I carry my Waiter or Alox Bantam or would a partnered Alox Minichamp/Alox Solo be classed as minimalist?

Lol! Its going to fun and interesting. I have always carried a heavy duty SAK or multi and a blade of some sort since I was a kid. My first SAK was a Supertimer. Giving up all that for a 2 layer sak, I think it will be a challenge for sure.

I'm in two minds between this, and a small Tinker

My rider to the challenge is that I'll still be carrying either a KST or my bladeless Fuse as backup,as should there be a SAK fail,I can't just shut my shoulders at a customer and say I can't do something because of a MTo challenge

I will, however fess up to any such events :tu:

So, I made 2 combos
Midnight Manager + GDC Zip Blade
or
SwissCard Lite + GDC Zip Blade

instead of the bulk I usually carry.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

SAK Fail????? That's heresy! I had to reach for a nitro pill when I read that... I dare say the customer would be upset that you'd even think of an SAK failure! :)

That one pictured above would cover the bases for day to day carry though - phillips and standard, bottle opener, toothpick/tweezers and a blade!

There's some decidedly non-minimalist stuff being talked about, and the challenge hasn't even started yet. Stop making excuses and give it a go, you big jessies.  ;)

Those are great tools. The More is my main blade for camping, hunting and bushcrafting in general. I would to get some of the other that you have mentioned, but money is kinda tight, and I can spend so much on cool toys.

Always love Mora, no matter how many different knives I have tried, I still am in love with Mora geometry for anything that is wood related.

It's all nasal snuff. Plain in the box, and flavoured in the tins. At last count I'd got over 60 flavours to choose from  :D Forced to choose between blueberry and toffee, I'd probably go for toffee (though the rum and raisin is very nice too) unless it was for all day and I'd ditch both and stick to the plain  :)
That's cool, and 60 flavours to choose from!  Could you tell just by nose, which one is which?  :)

Probably not. Some are quite distinct, apricot, toffee, sea breezes, thyme and lemon, chocolate orange, christmas pudding ... but many are more subtle in their differences. A lot of them also change quite a bit dependent on air quality, humidity, temperature and such, and can be pleasant one day but not another

Wow, that's interesting to know, learn something new everyday.   :tu:

Minimalism is "making due with what you've got"... Improvise! You'd be surprised what you can do with the most basic SAK if you just go with it.

The Pioneer/SI or similar are easily up to 99% of the tasks people could reasonably ask of a pocket knife type tool.

You guys have got me really thinking about giving it a go without any MTs.  The only thing I really feel I may need is the pliers, which I doubt my Compact can replicate, no matter how great the improvisation skills may be   I may try it out at first though, and if I encounter a need for a multitool, that may cause me to start carrying one again.

Whilst I agree with the sentiment, for some people that's going to be like wearing flip flops in industrial areas instead of safety boots for a month - not very sensible. I WILL be taking some pair of little pliers based pliers tool. Why? Because if I didn't I'd need to carry actual pliers ... and I don't consider that very minimalist  :D

We need to accept individuals need to make their own decision as to how minimalist they can go, just like they have to decide what tools they carry "normally"

I've been monitoring my SAK uses for the last few days and I think I'll fail very soon with the Waiter.

LOTS of use of scissors, awl, and phillips once or twice. All the tools the Waiter lacks.

BTW, when do we start?

Pliers is the only thing I do sometimes need and when I do they're sure nice to have! I've EDC'd the same Leatherman classic for 20 yrs now. When I stop and think about it the one tool I use on that Leatherman 90% of the time is the pliers. The screwdrivers occasionally. The knife blade almost never, the other tools no because the SAK has those. In fact I don't even think of the Leatherman as a knife at all - it's a tool.

If your occupation or lifestyle requires a specialized tool (pliers are def that IMHO) then yes you need that tool. Otherwise the basic Leatherman I have actually has all the same implements my Pioneer has. A dilemma yes!

I'd almost say if you carried a MT for the purpose of ONLY it's pliers - due to personal needs in your day to day tasks - then that's not necessarily a violation of the Challenge... Because pliers are a tool that cannot be replicated by anything else.

If you do a lot of outdoors, tinkering or handyman activities a MT, flashlite and SAK are a basic necessity in life. If you're an average Joe who just drives to a desk job and then goes home again to watch TV, bbq dinner, etc then a fairly simple SAK will get you through life pretty easily. Geez, most folks nowdays don't even carry a pocket knife or MT at all! By that standard we here are all MacGyvers!  :climber:

This is why I decided on the Compact.  It's a rather minimalist type SAK, but has many bases covered.  That's as far as I'm willing to go ;)

I would love to carry something smaller like the PST just to have the pliers on me, even though it's a very capable tool in itself.  Unfortunately, mine is in storage right now, along with the majority of my collection.

I'm an office guy myself, but also handle the occasional file cabinet or desk type repair or odd job.  Pliers can come in handy there, and they also come in handy at times removing paper jams from our mail folder/inserter machine.  However, I do have a few tools scattered around between my office and the mail processing room, so I wouldn't be lost if I didn't carry one, at least for work, unless I was away from this area and in another of our buildings.

Overall, I don't use pliers a lot at all, but they have been very handy when needed.  As you said, nothing can replicate them.  I just wish I had a more minimalistic multitool with them.  It is just about the primary use I have for a multi, and like you, I don't even think of them as knives, but more as a tool.  A SAK is pretty much all I need, and my Rogueneer covers everything I ever really need for the most part, other than pliers of course.

Yeah, it's odd how many people carry nothing.  I used to be one of those people until about 2.5 years ago, and now I don't know how I managed without at least a SAK.  It doesn't seem right to go anywhere without one ;)

The nail file would be sweet to have. Maybe I might mod it a tad later. Not sure.
