TiNi coating blades

Do you get knives that have a TiNi coating?

If so, how does that affect their edge retention and ease of sharpening? I would think it would help with the former, but make it a pain to sharpen them. However, once sharpened, wouldn't you effectively get rid of the TiNi layer, and so lose its benefits?

My understanding is that the TiNi coating isn't really supposed to make a long lasting edge. But rather give a better scratch resistance to to the whole blade. Take a look at DLC'ed ones, the edges are usually the bare steel but the rest is coated.

Also, and if I recall correctly, TiNi reduces the friction coefficient and the reactiveness under higher temperatures. These are far more important for carbide inserts than to knives, but you get the idea.

Pretty sure as with all coating it's done before factory sharpening so you don't have any on the edge.

There was a kershaw (?) model that's chisel ground so theoretically you have the coating function as edge, but I can't imagine it hold more than a few cuts before the very apex of coating breaks off though.
