Replacing the OHT's blade?
on: October 13, 2014, 09:05:15 PM
Hey,
I own the oht for over six months now, and I came to a realization that the blade is simply not enough for me. Considering the fact I'm living off a soldier's paycheck, I can't afford to buy a new Leatherman simply because of the blade. So I looked over the internet and it looks like there are few leathermans out there that use the same locking mechanism that the oht uses, meaning the blades can fit in, if I take out the screwdriver and take the leatherman apart.
SO..

1. Can anyone tell me if there's a replacement blade that's somewhat bigger than the oht's and I can order?
2. same goes for a screwdriver to take the oht apart.
3. any other ideas?

Hi and welcome :2tu:

I'm guessing your serving with the US Army?

As to the OHT,a couple of the guys have been experimenting with putting bigger PE blades in( from the Surge or the Wave I think ) and they'll probably be along shortly to share their experiences.

Thing to do,have a look over in the Mod Squad, and if the transplant works as an idea, then advertise for a trade or a WTB for the blade. I've got a notion you can also get them from our friends at Texas a Tool Crafters

Not sure if you are talking regarding the serrated or the plain blade, but if it´s the serrated i can help you - as i replaced that a few days ago.

I used the serrated blade of a BO Wave, which i bought from TexasToolcrafters (via Ebay). It´s hole is a little bit to big compared to the OHTs, so i turned me a brass bushing. Then some grinding to get the pivot area to the same shape as the original OHTs. And as a final step some reshaping of the tip, making it sleeker to have more space to fold the screwdriver into the scales.

That´s all, with the serrated. Same can be done with the plain edge, but due to the OHTs scales shape it might be more dangerous, as a longer blade than the original will expose it´s tip in the OHT scales cutout.

Atm TTC seems to have only the plain edge: http://www.ebay.de/itm/Replacement-Blade-for-Leatherman-Wave-Charge-Multi-Tools-Black-Oxide-420hc-/201061518849?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ed0334e01

For disassembling you need two Torx security bits number 10.

Thanks for the fast replies!

kirk13, actually in the IDF, but close enough  :D

Lichtbote, I was talking about the plain blade, the serrated is enough for now (but it's good to know I can change it as well).

Looks like I'll go ahead and get the plain blade from Ebay. and I can't imagine the tip will be that dangerous, as long as it stays "inside" the cutout.. I don't see myself getting cuts from that since I carry the OHT in the sheath 24/7. Also, do you have any experience working with the waves blade on the OHT? does it hold and lock like the other tools?

And final question is,  does the plain blade require any changes before inserting it in the OHT? or is it a prefect fit? and if it does need any changes, can the be made with regular tools? I'm kinda under-equipped when it comes to working tools (brass bushing included).

Kampfer replaced the plain blade some time ago: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,53831.msg929577.html#msg929577

But due to the tip pointing out he swapped back in the original blade. For the same reason i stayed away from it, additional the serrated is better for the rough work. I wished we would have had them while i was on duty.

The swap i made is with the Waves serrated blade, so the pivot of the Waves plain blade is also to big and would need a bushing too. Additional it´s pivot area need to be reshaped, to get the locking functionality (can be done with a bench grinder, maybe with a dremel if you have the right grinding discs).

It´s no one to one swap, they need to be made to fit.
Have fun.

Bye,
Michael

In that case, looks like I'm gonna stay with the original blade for some time.. Anyway, thanks for the info and the tips, I'll be sure to check back in if I'll get around doing that.

Thanks again for the fast replies and instructions!

I just tried swapping out my BO Wave's PE blade for my OHT's PE blade. The tip being seen and slightly touchable didn't bother me, but the blade not locking unless I pushed back hard, not just with my thumb when opening the blade.

I put it back stock, but it is doable.
