There may be some valid points about drunks and crimes of passion. So what is the plan for law abiding citizens who are the target of violent crimes?

In my opinion there is no difference for those. (The same i think for guns, concealed or open carried.)

They are untrained, the fake safety feeling might even lead them to stand a attacker where they better would have run or let them have all your money. And watching some youtubevids regarding knifefighting, then train in mommys basement, is nothing that brings any good for anyone in such a situation.

Robert, we both know that there is a difference in being one of those mighty range cowboys who´s shooting planned (in the meaning you´re knowing what´s coming) on harmless targets ("hey look how close i´m to the ten with all my shots"), and being in a sudden situation where you really can be killed. And such above is nothing like being covered by your group/platoon if you have a weak moment of freeze.
Have fun.

Bye,
Michael

In my opinion laws like those mainly hurt the law abiding citizens and act as a way to control the law abiding population however the government sees fit.

And for sure you can explain that to me - why do you think a law, that forbids a small knife (just cause it´s oho and locking) but allows a big fixed knifes, hurts the law abiding citizens?

It´s just a stupid law cause it only/mainly refers to the way the knife is working, but not it´s damage making size.
Have fun.

Bye,
Michael

First, Harley congratz on 1k .

I think in the USA, violence already has escalated.
Factors like population density, poverty, alcohol abuse, but also the people themselves etc. so there are regional factors that make a system work, or not. So, not everything that works for Europe works for the USA and vice versa.

As far as making some misswired unit decide to not do a crime because of the increase from robbery to armed robbery seems unlikely.
Well, it works in many regions of the world, but as stated above not everything works everywhere.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Oh no I did not mean that at all. What I mean is limiting folders and allowing large fixed blades is stupid.

I love that they allow a good fixed.

I was talking about laws that limit what a law following adult citizen can carry hurt the same type of citizen and in no way discourage or stop the bad guys.

That´s why i wrote 2 different answers with quotes to 2 different peoples.  ;)

You just answered to my question regarding captain spauldings post.  :D

As usual these laws are not simple, they all have those "If" and "when" things build in - so you are allowed to carry a lot of generally prohibited blade types if you really need them for work, just not for fun of "i want".
Have fun.

Bye,
Michael

Well, the rationale behind this law is, that a folder can be carried concealed and if it is OHO, it can be deployed very fast and surprisingly, reducing the ammount of time the other side has to react. A fixed blade or a THO folder can not be deployed as fast and thus is less dangerous.

IMHO this law would be fine, if it would include an additional blade size requirement for the folders. Because lets face it, I am not going to go stabbity stab stab with my Spyderco Manbug.

A fixed blade is the fastest to deploy. Or am I reading that wrong?

True, but if it has a certain size it cannot be carried concealed that easily.
Also, to carry a fixed blade, you need a reason (work, dagger-fighting-class, hunting etc.). You cannot carry a fixed blade without a reason, especially not when going to a bar for a beer.

I am going to assume you are joking when you say a knife that is already open is slower then one you have to open to deploy.

You are also messing with me when you say you can not conceal a fixed blade knife? That is prolly ture I mean you can not conceal a pistol or sub machine gun either. I am being sarcastic about that whole last bit by the way.

Haha! In Germany we can carry a fixed blade whenever we like. As long as it has a blade below 12 cm. And as long as we do not carry it in specific public environments.

Sadly, I am not joking. This is what was said by one of our members of parliament, who was part of the creation process of said law.

And here I thought America had the market cornered on dumb lawmakers. Seems that is not the case.

Good to know, but I still want to visit Germany someday.

Unfortunately, my lifetime is a bit limited. But I am definitely an EDC type personality.  I have a lot of stuff on me, from power banks, USB adapters, multitools and pocket tools.  The Carhart work vest wore out, and the new one has more pockets, so obviously my gross weight went up.  Friends joked that I shouldn't walk on frozen lakes because I might fall through and sink like a stone.

I guess it comes from my dislike of being someone who doesn't carry anything, and is always laying their wallet or cellphone somewhere, only to lose them frequently.  I did lose my wallet last year, and went through the hassle of that, and I was inspired to put my new wallet on a chain, connected to my belt.

I also carry a Benchmade Tactical Triage Rescue Folding Knife, which cost me over $300.  It has a seat belt cutter and tungsten glass breaker, but I doubt it will ever save my life at this point.  I'm a bit too old to climb through a broken window in a wreck.

I'm a fan of the retractile key retainers; I have a Nitecore Tip on a retractable line, as well as a Nitecore Tube as a backup.  I use it nearly every day for looking into dark corners and going out at night.

I love it when old threads come back to life!

I rethought my WUSH bag (Wake Up, S&*ts Happening) bag that lives next to bed a couple of years ago, but the tools in it really didn't change; my multitool is still my 2003 LM Wave, however my flashlight changed to the Streamlight Protac 1L-1AA and the folder is an Ontario Utilitac II. I also added my SAK Craftsman because it's too useful to leave behind :hatsoff:

I love threads that are almost as old as my socks!

One Multitool or One SAK:  Victorinox Explorer Plus.  I don't need pliers enough to carry them, and the Explorer Plus is for me about the right balance of size vs utility.  Victorinox scissors are the best, and I love the inline phillips, magnifier, pen, etc.

One flashlight:  Streamlight Stylus Pro.  Its a thin, 2xAAA pen light that rides easy in the pocket, has a stiff clicky that won't activate itself, and the most simple UI possible - on and off.

One folding knife:  good question.  Maybe an Opinel No. 9.  Its big enough to be a real knife, and light enough to carry easily.  Has aesthetic appeal.

I’ll play now that this thread has been resurrected

MT/SAK:  For this one I am torn between a SwissTool Spirit and SAK Yeoman.  As much as my brain says I should choose the more capable Spirit, my heart says the Yeoman.  There is also the factor that the tool in the pocket is better than the tool left at home.  So, despite being less capable, I’m going with the Yeoman.

Flashlight:  For this one I am also torn between the HDS Rotary and Reylight Pineapple Mini.   Despite the HDS being bigger/heavier and not as common of battery, the HDS wins.  To me the HDS is just more proven.  Despite not normally being carried as much, the HDS has been beat up and used in extreme conditions, without issue.  The HDS UI and beam pattern just make it more versatile.

Knife:  Buck 113.  This one was a fairly easy choice. I’ve come to appreciate small fixed blades over folders, even for edc.  The 113 is a great size and cutter, while still being fairly easy to carry.  I also love the ergonomics.

Multitool: original Swisstool. I've had mine for over 25 years and have used it a lot, and it still seems to be barely broken in.
Flashlight: Emisar D4V2 with XPL-HI U4 8A 2850K emitters. I use scavenged power tool 18650 cells in it.
Knife: Carl Schlieper Eye Brand large sodbuster, carbon steel.

Of course I would want to have some more dedicated tools that I grab when needed. Vice-Grips, bigger flashlights (and I prefer incans for my lifetime lights), a variety of fixed blade knives, etc. EDC stuff is for unplanned jobs; planned jobs really need purpose built tools.

Being confined to the couch I've got a lot of free time to browse the forms lol

If I could have one tool, one light and one knife. That's a hard decision when you have a lot of favorites. I would say for the tool the Arc, I love the free platform and the toolset is perfect for my daily needs. I could care less about the Magnacut blade because I carry a folder but it's there is I need it. As for flashlight I would say the Arkfeld Pro because it's compact and very user friendly. For knife blade this is a really difficult choice, knives to me are like Pringles. I guess the Benchmade Griptilian, it's light, great ergos and cuts really well.

- Victorinox Pioneer X -  I prefer the thinner Pioneer, but I'll lug around scissors for the utility.
- Chris Reeve Umnumzaan Magnacut - Perfect all-rounder and bomb proof.
- Olight Baton 4 (with charge case in bag) - I don't often carry a light, but this one small and powerful enough for my needs.

Multi:  PSTII (with clip)

Torch:  3T EOS

Knife:  French Thiers knife (2 blades, 1 Saw, 1 awl), so everything that the PSTII lacks.

At least that is what I have for life for now.  :D

Okay, I define EDC as just that, everyday, not all around for bushcraft, survival, fending off hordes of who/whatever.  So, what are my choices for every "normal" day.

Victorinox Skipper Pro
Streamlight Microstream
Becker BK14
That’s gonna leave a mark.
