I got a Ontario Rat 3
on: December 08, 2014, 01:46:15 AM
I got myself an Ontario Rat 3 today and really like the feel in hand.  It's previously loved and looks to have been used but not abused.  I like the red micarta handle scales but the jury is still out on the powed coated texture.  I like the color but the texture is a bit "textured" for this little knife IMO.

It needs an edge put back on it and wondered if I should stick with a 20 degree or something else.  It will be general utility, food, rubber hose, zip ties, fabrics, and some other random things.  No real heavy weight stuff as this is a little knife.

Also how would I know if it was D2 vs 1095? I'm guessing it will be marked somewhere if it were D2 right?

Picked it up yesterday and as with all new acquisitions I "tested" it out on what ever I had at hand and before me.  I feels good in hand and in hand I was surprised how thin it feels, that's not a bad thing just an observation.  The blade needed a touch up as it came to me used and dullish.  I hit it with ceramic rods and then a stropping and its good to go, it took an edge very nice.  I get why the coating is on the blade but it seems "thick" and time will tell how it holds up.  Funny thing is every dagone video "review" is a knife not used  I'm seriously over these lame reviewers.

I'll be in Cleveland National Forrest in a few weeks so this little sucker will go to work.  I dont rotate a bunch of gear so the gear that makes the cut (  :pok: ) gets used.  I like it and more so that I got it for less than 1/2 new.  I quickly compared it to my lower cost little fixed blades and it sits right between my Mtech 8035 and Schrade SCHF16 which is fine by me.

I feel a Kydex sheath at the MSRP price point IMO would be better but the sheath works.  I like the sheath on the Mtech more its Kydex and the clip is metal vs plastic and the retention is way better.

Thanks for the imput.
Also, not sure about how to tell what kind of steel it is made from. Never messed with D2 steel. I know high carbon blades makes sweet sparks if hit with a piece of flint.

I found that it would be marked.  I'm excited to get this little guy out in the woods and cut smurf.

Regardless of the steel, it looks like it will be a great user.

Agreed.  The blade shape is nice and I do like the flat grind.
