Cleaning a Mora 2000
on: December 19, 2014, 02:05:08 PM
A guy at work wanted to throw this Mora 2000 in the trash after it had gotten dull and full of constuction foam. I could not let him do that, and he was happy to let me have it :)
The question is:
What is the best way to remove the construction foam? Acetone?
Do you have any suggestions?

scrape off what you can with a blade.  Then use mineral spirits

With no practical experience I would say acetone, too. But maybe a mineral spirit would work, too?

My thoughts: Would acetone attack the handle? I fear you could damage it while cleaning the blade (Not that any other new handle wouldn't look better  )

I'd also scrape first ( hard plastic ) scraper then use 0000 steel wool then if needed use acetone/mineral sprits or similar.

Congrats on getting this and getting her back in service.

I'd  scrape most of it off with a razor blade then use a scotch Brite pad soap and water for cleaning the rest.

Or try

Household Alcohol might melt foam but I can't remember. I work with that crap .Denatured alcohol will

I would try nail polish remover (acetone) to clean off the blade, but would be careful not to get any on the handle.

Is it stainless or carbon?

The Mora 2000 is stainless.

Just for fun I stuck the blade in a glass of Cola Zero over night.
This morning i took it out and tried to scrape the foam off with a spatula.
It came off in big flakes with no effort at all

Right result, I only just read this thread and am quite relieved to see you didn't end up using acetone as it has some well documented problems when in contact with human skin, and would have been likely to soak into the handle material.

On the subject of coke you can also clean chrome with it and,.....your toilet. If you pour a litre of the cheapest coke you can buy into the toilet and leave it overnight it will remove all the limescale without damaging the vitreous porcelain from which it is made  :D

Thats what gloves are for... no seriously, its like with any machine you cleaned  thoroughly, you need to grease it afterwards :P. Acetone primarily dries out your skin. It also removes the protective layer, but if you don't do it on a regular base you're fine.

Well, stomach acid is no joke either it has a pH as low as 1.5, coke has merely a pH of 2.5. Stomach controls the pH level with proton pumps and it secretes mucus and bicarbonate to protect itself.

Sure was. I did a Fuse, Sideclip, and I think a Swisstool. Results were pretty good for removing rust. Syph did a test on black oxide to see if it would remove the black oxide coating and it did not so it should be safe on black oxide as well.
