SlimJim issues
on: January 16, 2015, 09:50:03 PM
Hi all,

Considering purchasing a slimjim XL for work carry. I've encountered some real paranoia cases here and I don't want to freak anyone out, but I refuse to not carry. Long story short, I recall reading some really bad reviews on SlimJim concerning the lock(s), subpar assisted open, etc. Can anyone enlighten me if these issues have been fixed in the ~3 years since release?

Subd, my brother has one and I hate it.

Way to thin to hold comfortably, but I guess it's suppose to Cary easily.

The assisted opening does not open the blade fully, and the liner lock won't hold the blade closed if you tap the back of the knife on something.

But the lock to hold the blade down (anti accident open) does work flawlessly.

While I've not had a lot of experience with the Slim Jim specifically, I don't really like SOG's AO system.  It's a pair of coil springs in the pivot instead of a backspacer spring or torsion bar which other companies.  They can weaken quite significantly over time, which can impair both the AO and lockup.

I'd personally suggest a Kershaw Leek or Shallot if you're looking for a super thin metal assisted opening knife.
