I put this in the random videos thread, but it probably won't get much attention over their and I personally think it is cool enough for a thread. Enjoy.  :tu:

So, just what are they making with those substantial chunks of metal ?

I can think of more than a few people I think need a very close look at that machine....

Seriously, that is pretty awesome.  The guy holding the metal and the guy controlling the machine seem to work amazingly well together.

Awww ... cute ikkle baby hammer  :D They were working quite slickly there  :tu:
Despite being in engineering and visiting various factories, it's not often I get to be alongside hot work. It's great when you do though - although I've never been able to get in/near the bigger forges with individual components up to 500 tonne.

at one point there is a third guy as well driving the big grabby thing.

The lack of safety gear is a bit of a worry...  or have I been conditioned to the new cotton padded, nanny world of today?

:D Hot work like that is very up close and personal.  ;) It's not so bad for the hammer driver and manipulator driver as they're distanced from the workpiece, but the forgemen on the tools will have PPE (Personal protective equipment) to suit the task. The rest is in the training, teamwork and op sequencing, and everyone knowing what they and the other guys are doing at any point. They need to work efficiently too. With a lot of this type of work they have might have to size/blank, pierce, beck and who knows what else in quite a short amount of time to avoid reheating the component. The forging itself does generate some heat within the workpiece, but if they let the temp drop below a certain point they risk putting flaws in. It's very impressive to watch, especially on the multi-op jobs.

It's a Russian video. They are making some kind of an axe.

Here's the original video and google translate of the description.

Iron and Steel Works. Employment and training of young professionals. 3 ex-ton pneumatic forging hammer. The operator and the blacksmith at work. Forging an ax for cutting metal. Coiling spring.

That's a great video - easy in the UK to forget that those sort of machines were a staple manufacturing tool only forty years ago - sadly probably not many in use here any more now.

You think that's the safety feature?  Every morning they bless the machine by playing the entire "Please Hammer don't hurt them" CD?
