Why oh why aren't...
on: July 21, 2008, 11:53:17 PM
MT manufactures making more efforts into making slip jointed tool's for the more ''hostile'' markets ???

Everyday here in the UK the anti knife zealots gain strength, and more and more politician's make empty promises about making Britain a safer place, and how there going to change the laws to effectively ban knives ect ect >:(

Now I'll be the first to admit that the UK market for knives is pretty small, and for MT's probably a lot smaller still, so I can't imagine LM, Gerber et al losing a great deal of sleep over the risk of loosing it's market share over here. But what of the rest of europe ???

Like it not, most European countries have either banned, or will be banning assited openers and one handed openers, so surely it must be time for the major manufactures to wise up and start turning out street legal MT's with slipjointed blades again ???

I guess this is going to be one of those "deal with it after it has happened" situations.  :-\

Two reasons I reckon, firstly as Micky says, we aren't a huge market, although I don't think any of the big manufacturers would relish losing their market share to it's competitors.

The other could well be that they are waiting to see exactly what changes are made to laws in each country before doing anything. I think I would, as you could make a very expensive mistake!

I'm pretty sure that they will eventually introduce "compliant" designs rather than lose out.

I reckon he was (fight, fight, fight)..

But he's right though unfortunately, I wouldn't be so keen on my 13 yr old walking the streets with a multi - I trust him, but he could get into trouble if someone saw it. Shame really, I was never apart from my SAK at that age, used it for everything.

I think it's worth it. You could get the tool confiscated, but it's a risk I'll take because I'd be lost without my MT when out and about. If it has to stay at home, then that's most of the benefit of a Multi gone.

I can completely understand why others would prefer to avoid sailing that close to the wind though, and if the law / tolerance start to change I'll probably change my opinion too, which would be a shame.

Thats the problem, we shouldn't have to be careful, we should just be able to grab the MT of our choice, secure in the knowledge that if we do get searched it won't matter because it's street legal. Instead off trying to pull our tshirts down a bit further everytime a cop car drives by :-\

Not to sound like a jackass or anything, although I know that's exactly what it sounds like, but what are you gents doing about this?

In a previous thread someone said something about the average Briton being too lazy and complacent, which just means that you guys are at the mercy of whatever whims catch the candy assed politicos' fancy.

Now might be a good time for a grassroots movement or even one of you guys to run for local office and interject a small amount of sense into public (dis)service.

As for why manufacturers don't make much to suit you guys, well that's possibly got as much to do with liability as anything else.  Non locking blades might be construed as unsafe in today's society and no one wants to get sued any more than they already are.  That and I'm sure all the tools sold in Europe per annum are maybe on par with the number of tools sold with those sold in any region in the US.  It's sad to say that we outside of the US (Canada included) make up such a small fraction of their market that is just isn't a big concern.  Most probably think that a Juice or Guppy should be enough for anyone in a non- locking blade friendly place.

hahah, here we can carry almost any blade pretty easily, only some switchblades are banned but onehand openers, locking blades, all blade lenghts are free for use.as long as u dont keep it under everyones eyes, cops dont take it away even if they inspect you.and still...the most common item to execute a kill here is fixed blade MORA.

bums, gipsies, narcs, and alcoholics carry always mora it seems.

and i didnt mean to be any sort of racist by mentioning gypsies, they just have this culture of settling the score with blades and carryin one.

In a previous thread someone said something about the average Briton being too lazy and complacent, which just means that you guys are at the mercy of whatever whims catch the candy assed politicos' fancy.

That may be very true in general but I don't think so in this case. In fact it's the opposite with politicians following public opinion, fueled by sensationalist media.

There have been a couple of high profile murders involving knives recently, both involving young people who reportedly carry knives and were 'gang' members. We have an unpopular government and it's opposition scoring points off each other with various hair-brained suggestions on how we can stamp out this new menace. If I've managed to keep up, the latest suggestion is compulsory imprisonment for anyone found carrying a knife. It's a hot topic and common sense doesn't look like putting in an appearance anytime soon. It's crazy.

But the harsh reality is that there would be no public sympathy for any pro-knife lobby here today. There will be a clamp down, even though our current knife laws (IMO) amongst the most sensible I've heard of. Today, if I was stopped whilst carrying an SAK, it would be at the police's discretion as to what happened. They could legally send me on my way, confiscate it or even arrest me, depending on the circumstances.

What is likely to happen is that first option will disappear, so that my knife becomes another point on the statistics as the government prove how they are stamping out the disease.

I used to come here a lot.

IMHO, fear is the on missing on the formula for a successful anti anti knife campaign, anti knife group are more afraid of the knife than the anti anti knife group is afraid of losing their knives, fear is the best motivator  :D

hmmm this gang thing......about 50 percent of my friends are in gangs, but i mean motorcycle gangs, and they sure dont stab people here, they carry multi´s a lot,not any tacticals etc and use them in some roadside reparations and in camp chores.

here the "bad" 1% gangs use anti aircraft rocket launchers and guns to scare the public, not knives.

but iam afraid too,of the fact that some day in neardby future they will start to make some tight rules concerning knife-carry.....thats a real bad issue.
