That's pretty cool.  I wonder if they can scale it up for a car?

That looks pretty cool. I think I might have to give it a shot when it becomes available.

Dead batteries are one of the biggest issues I have to deal with regularly, and is the main reason I bought the Bio Lite stove.

Let's just hope it doesn't have the problems gas jet lighters are known for...

I was wondering about that too.

Also, is butane considered a green fuel?

Well, I believe it's cleaner than petrol and diesel (cars on lpg are supposed to be cleaner than petrol\diesel as well, right?)

But in the end, it's just burning a fossil fuel so it's not really green I think.

What other gasses are available in a pressurized can that would be an option?

Probably? None... I think hydrogen would work through a fuel cell well, but I really, -really- have no knowledge on that out of basic chemistry :P Plus, I doubt it would be available in a can.

I don't think there's any truely green fuel sources like that.

There's a lot of work on hydrogen based fuel cells, they work just fine. Hydrogen just happens to be a pain to handle, transport and store, since it leaks through “anything” and has low density. If we ever see wide-spread consumer grade hydrogen fuel cells, it might be in a Toyota.

If you are willing to share your drink with your cell phone, perhaps ethanol fuel cells might be a greener alternative than butane.

Ethanol is very unlikely for a device like this.  It doesn't have the energy density of a hydrocarbon, and it's liquid at STP meaning it would have to be pumped, whereas the natural expansion of a compressed or liquified gas provides fuel pressure.

And anyway, I think a little butane catalyzer is a lot cleaner than that coal plant that recently dumped hundreds of tons of coal ash into the Cape Fear river.

Pretty much anything is cleaner than a coal plant; we are talking about a technology which releases more radioactive elements to the atmosphere than nuclear power...
