looking for a new light...
on: July 26, 2008, 12:43:45 AM
ive been using maglights forever now, but it seems theyjust can't hold up to those fancy pants surefires and fenix's, so i think it's time that i get an upper level light. i have a few requirements...

-under $50
-uses store bought batteries(or rechargeable with LONG runtimes)
-isn't massive
-doesn't have expensive upkeep(bulbs and whatever)

it doesn't need to have armor plating or any of that kinda stuff, although i love the surefires(way to out of my price range for most i think...)but it would be a plus for it to be waterproof/sandproof/sand-water mush that you find at the bottom of a big hole at the deep-proof.

thanks guys!

I will highly recommend Fenix L2D. Runs on 2 AA alkaline or NiMh.

L2D CE at 50.08 USD less 8%

Or get the Premium Cree Q5 at 62.50 less 8%

Yeah, go for the L2D. I'd also recommend buying from the Fenix Store because you get a lifetime warranty too.. There is a deal going on- you can buy the L2D CE and a E01 for a combined price of only $56.50..

Here's a link- https://www.fenix-store.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_52&products_id=473

TK10 is a LOT bigger than L2D, heavier too.

Just something you need to know about store bought batteries. Alkaline cells are not made for high current drain, so it works well on low power mode, but in high mode where the flashlight draws over an amp from the cells, it'll die pretty quick, it's jus the nature of the alkalilne chemistry and nothing you can do about it. While lithium cells can be bought in stores, they are prohibitly expensive.

In case of AA cells, rechargeable actually is a lot better, they handle high current without problem and have higher capacity than alkaline. Most of them however self discharge quickly, so if you don't want to charge them at least once per week you need to ge the low self discharge ones, like sanyo eneloop.

the last thing i want is a "high maintenance" flashlight. i can tell you right know its not worth it to me to get a whole set of rechargeables just for a flashlight. especially when camping, where im looking for easy, disposable cells to fuel my light. i guess i can accept the extra cost in the long runof buying more batteries. that l2 looks nice.., and my pric elimit is pretty strict, sorry mike:) also, has anyone had any expeirience with a surefire g2? looks nice.

look at this
http://www.amazon.com/SureFire-BB-Y-Butter-Boy-Yellow/dp/B0011ZNPRI/ref=pd_sbs_sg_23

if it comes in stock at that price than we're in business!

The Terralux LED modification for the AA Mini Mags is worth a look.

It's not the Nite Ize crappy 3 LED mod...I think the Terralux is around $20 and can be dropped right into any Mini Mag.

In that case get the $10 48 AA brick from costco, however I would avoid the one mike posted (sorry mike :p), as it would murder alkaline AA.

Surefire G2 and G2L use cr123a cells and unless you are wiling to buy online in bulk you are looking at $12 for two cells in store. G2 burns through them like nothing and G2L is out of your price target.

I'm with Corrugated! Try Terralux for the Mini Mag! Besides being inexpensive, 2 AA's are available anywhere.

well, kinda long story, but i chose riverrider since i was debating on which MT to get, so i did a little bit of web searching and found you guys with articles on all of them, and i wanted to get more involved and be able to ask my own questions, so i joined with a name atribute to the rafting trip i need the MT for.

i love the idea of a terralux, but i have 2 things against it
1-im not compeltely in love with the operation of a maglight, unless a terralux upgrade puts a button on it or something...
2-i don't need it to be a minimag, and i would like to use all of the space i can use on a flashlight, unless the upgrade really is that good

also, where cna you get them?

right now that l2 looks pretty nice...

There's a dude selling his D10 on Cpm right now for 47.00.

I asked about your name cause I thought your story might be something like that.

The wife and I have rafted for years, we own two raft and two driftboats, in fact my avatar is my wood driftboat that I built.
