Some of you are probably wondering why I would run for a steam train.

Grandad was a train driver.
He cleaned and fired on Wa's, K's and Ka's.
Later driving Ab's, J's, Ka's, Bb's, Railcars and Da's.

Any time with grandad was spent working on or talking about locomotives.

Just found a couple pics from a trip we did with the kids last year.

More information here, driving creek railway and potteries.

Well worth the effort to get there, we all had a great time, heaps of fun.

G'Day "Z"

This comment brought back a few memories for me. My granddad was one of the last qualified Steam Loko mechanics in the South African Railways. I was only very little then but most chats were around trains and how they worked. As much as they can be noisy and dirty there is a special charm these old machines still have that today's high speed strains don't have. I spent a few holidays looking and riding up front in them. No need for OHS stuff, we had good ol' common sense back then. And, no one ever got hurt, except... I was once told by one of the shunters, that the old skool shunters never had 10 fingers...

Last year we went on holiday to Port Macquarie on the northern coast of NSW. We spent a day in Timbertown, an old restored "town" that used to run sawmills and steam. They have a few steam engines there, and I got to play dead-man in one of the trips.

I do like the old steam engines, we often see them in Sydney doing heritage runs. And yes, I too run for a photo.  :D

I include some pics of the Timbertown trains.

Cheers,

Pete

Is that one of those trains that carries vehicles?

Union Pacific DD40AX Centennial, 6,600 hp, most powerful diesel locomotive ever made. UP's been a regular fan of big locomotives, but these were primarily a test bed for different technologies.

Here's a great shot of a Centennial hauling an excursion train up South Boulder Canyon, headed for the Moffat Tunnel. Its a wonder the loco can handle those tight curves, though come to think of it Yellowstone steamers regularly made that run and they were even longer.

My wife and I had a trip to York a couple of yeas ago and while there visited the National Railway Museum. It had a load of interesting things to see, my favourite was a Japanese Bullet train from the 60s this is the only one outside of Japan. It was like stepping back in time.

And something from a different age:

The National Railway Museum in York is really good. I was fortunate enough to be near its sister museum on a work trip to Saitama in Japan. it was really interesting to see how the Japanese started off buying stuff from Britain but quickly matched and then surpassed us.
