European knives by country
on: June 02, 2015, 04:28:22 PM
Found this. Not very accurate in some cases, but still interesting.

Portugal is well represented, the two models are indeed iconic and indigenous from the rectangle.

Paardenmes... I had to Google that :P
Seems to be some sort of traditional farmer's knife from a small part of the Netherlands (Zealand).

Switzerland:

The Swiss Army Knife is a popular swiss knife invented by Karl Elsener in Ibach. His company later became the world famous Victorinox and still produces those knives today.
Yet, they show a Wenger

Also, they added a lot of old knife forms but missed some of the most important ones.
Stilleto (fixed blade), kidney dagger (in German we call it them Testis daggers :D), Swiss dagger, Rondel dagger... probably many more.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

In pre-Victorian Britain they were also know as Ballock daggers, a slightly less polite way of saying "testis".  :)

Only on feet of pretty ladies...

Nah, they are legal to own but illegal to carry, at least that is my understanding :salute:

More than legal.

Never heard of a "Lierenaar", but since the town of Lier (where the knife originated from)  is about 6km from my home I did google it and it turns out the knife was used in Lier and the towns around Lier, that's pretty cool  :D.

So now I want one ...

It's completely off-topic, but Ruben Block is from Lier as well :)

Why are some knives marked by style, and some by maker?

is it just me or do some of those seem like variations on of one knife that don't bring anything new to the table?
Solving problems you didn't know you had in the most obscure way possible

"And now, it's time to hand this over to our tame race axe driver. Some say, he can live in the forest for six months at a time without food, and he knows of a secret tribe of only women where he is their God. All we know is, he's call the Styx!" - TazzieRob
