I think loans are a part of life.  Not many people have $20-40,000 sitting unused in their bank account to buy a car, and it would take the same amount of time to save that much up as it would to just pay off the loan.  Since you can generally get a car with 0, or 0.9% finance, the loan doesn't really cost you anything.

But yes, you need to be able to afford the monthly payments, and if you can't, you should not be getting one.  Same with houses.  People tend to get the most expensive house the bank will allow, but if the interest rates were to ever go up, they'd no longer be able to afford the payments.

I like to have toys, and new cool stuff.  The thing is, if there's something I want, I'll either work enough overtime shifts to pay for it, or sell some other stuff that I no longer use.

I can loan you something close to what you're after, but it'll cost you an additional 5 SAKs and a Leatherman as repayment.

I think loans are a part of life.  Not many people have $20-40,000 sitting unused in their bank account to buy a car,

My nephew went to the States last year to work. He earns 1600-2000 a month. He lives with his girlfriend and rents an apartment with a third person (each pays $450 rent to the landlord). I don't know how they live and what they do, but after a few months they bought Audi A5 or so for 5000. That's far from the digits you mentioned and that car is actually quite cool according to me.

So, having that as an example, I still can't get what people do with their money for it never to be enough

I think I can count on pablo to sub me the interest. I kind of own his collection now.

Here there are lots of Pacific Islanders caught up with these loans. They are under enormous pressure to donate large amounts of money to their churches, so they take out loans to pay them.

I read that in total disbelief!!
I'm not religious and don't want to get drawn into anything sensitive - but my goodness it smacks of hypocrisy.

I live next door to a church i.e over my wall. People round here show zero respect, infact everyday the local dog owners walk their dogs into the church grounds and let the dog smurf everywhere!! Utterly disgusting and truly disrespectful.

That's a fairly low amount to save, and the car would be of a fair age (10+ years) for that price.  My Jeep was just over $4000 when we bought it 5 years ago, and it's a 2002.

Our primary car is a 2013 Hyundai Elantra that we bought new, as my wife wanted something reliable, and something with warranty.  I think the car was around $23,000, which is fairly cheap by new car standards.  It also has 0% financing, so it's not costing us anything more to finance, and it still has a couple of years of warranty left.

The thing with old cars, especially ones that you don't know the history of, is maintenance costs.  Sometimes they can end up costing you as much to maintain as you'd pay per month for a new one.

People always want more money, fancier things, bigger homes, the greenest grass, shiniest car...  We'd love to make more money, but we don't need to.  We make enough to live comfortably, eat healthy, and be able to go out and enjoy ourselves, and still be able to save for emergencies, and vacations.

We also have two young kids, which are very expensive!  Actually, now that they are both in school, they are MUCH cheaper!!  When both were in full time child care, we were paying $300 a week (over $15,000 a year).  We didn't have a new car then! :D

That's what I'm saying, there are a lot cheaper cars out there that people can get and avoid getting into debt :D

According to Wiki it maybe about 7 years old, though :D https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_A5

Not a fan of these type "predatory" loans.  Its a vicious cycle IMO of borrowing and never getting ahead.  Sadly there are those that must have the next best or what others have so these type loans are here to stay.

I am not a fan of borrowing however with home loans and auto loans I understand having to finance the large sum of money.  I was lucky to get both autos with 0 percent financing.  I have a credit card but haven't used it in well over 5 years.  If I need something that bad then I'm not opposed to using credit.  Thing is though I rarely "need" anything that bad.

This is so sad to see for two reasons, indeed:

- There are probably people so poor they're ready to get hurt for cheaper food
- There are smurfers who are ready to get hurt and hurt others only to get something at a bargain without really needing it

But again, this is not an "excuse" to go get a payday loan for me. I'd live off bread and tea for a couple of weeks instead of burying myself for life with a loan so that I can afford some (fancy) type of cheese or coke or something.

Speaking about my country, for the past few years there've been lots and lots of new Second-hand Clothes stores opened. People are indeed getting poorer, but there's another solution for them and another way to save some money from clothes. I myself have been to such a shop just once, but people say there are real bargains there. You can buy a kilo of clothes for 0.5-1 USD, for example.

So, while the flourishing of such stores is an indicator of people not being able to afford lots of new clothes, it's also a solution to this same problem.

I actually don't even get the idea behind/the meaning/the concept of ... BORROW. (I'm not speaking about disabled or sick in other ways people, I'm speaking about healthy people).

Borrow = I'm incapable of providing for myself, so I need someone else to take care of me
Borrow = I'm lazy and don't want to make an effort and make enough money to cover my expenses
Borrow = I feel entitled to other people's money, I'm a spoiled brat
Borrow = I have no self-control and can't say NO to myself when I see something I like
Borrow = I have extremely poor math skills and can't live on a budget
Borrow = A sheer form of humiliation

I though that the EU was going to make us all richer and happier..   :D  Wait until you join the Euro.. then the real fun begins.

In the UK second hand clothes shops or/and charity shops selling 2nd hand clothes have been doing well for years. Here we only have a few charity shops mainly run by Brits. However, with the hot weather we do not need a lot of clothes  :D

There are some, extreme, UK TV shows like benefits street and benefits Britain that may interest you.. Again, they do not really give a true picture but they do show some things.

Thanks, I'll go try to find these shows you mentioned.

I wouldn't watch Benefits Street or Benefits Britain for an objective view of people on welfare, it's a freak show designed to villify people who are welfare dependent and to distract the public from the huge amount of tax dodging carried out by the rich and powerful.

Well, I just checked out / still checking out the first episode that appeared when I typed it on YT. It's this one:

And I feel no sympathy, indeed, for the skinny rocker-type of guy, whose name I forgot, because he's SMOKING while on benefits. Well, dude. Buy some food instead of cigarettes. He's clearly relying on his girl's meager salary. And if he just checks for jobs online for fifteen minutes a day, that's really nothing serious he does.

I tend to find that the Rich, as Magnetus pointed out are not innocent, that a lot of the people on benefits/claimants/not working are also taking advantage of the system and that the middleish classes end up paying and supporting both..

From what I got (Jeez, British ENglish is a scary thing :D No offense meant  :salute:) one of the guys in the vid said... if they work more... they'll get just a tiny amount of money MORE, but this small amount would be enough for their benefits to be cut off. So, they're better off staying on benefits, getting a liittle less money instead of working their a**es off and being paid slightly more?

This is because more and more companies are offering lower wages and zero hour contracts. You may say 'so what' but workers here fought long and hard for good working conditions - companies never ever give up any concessions unless they absolutely have to (US civil rights activist Frederick Douglass said “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.”

These hard won rights have been eroded by the last few governments we've had. Why would you want to work for crappy wages on a zero hour contract for less money than you can get on welfare?

We have a tax credit system here which supports big corporations paying low wages by making up the wage - basically it's soSmurfpillsm for the rich and capitalism for the poor. We bailed out our banks, we prop up our royal family but all that is fine - just pick on the underclass and the foreigners.

Please don't watch those shows NNR - they're horrible and demonizing.

Well. I couldn't help it. Referring to some of these videos again AND to my actual life and acquaintances or extended family .... they complain about the lack of money AND smoke. My cousin's monthly cigarettes are 1/5th of his salary. Well. This should go towards your savings, not burned out. That's what's called "have money to burn" :D :D
