I am always surprised by how many take-aways and deliveries (pizza etc) people that claim to have no money get... some just buy ready made foods every day, smoke and then claim to have no money.....

Exactly ... or go to the movies, or cafes or whatever other sort of paid-entertainment...

And most importantly, when their budget gets tight, or when their working hours get reduced (me currently  :P), they still keep the "lavish" lifestyle they had before despite not having the money to afford it. *shrugs*

Everybody knows - Leonard Cohen

https://en.wikipedia.org/?title=Class_conflict

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Protestant_Ethic_and_the_Spirit_of_Capitalism

I though that the EU was going to make us all richer and happier..   :D  Wait until you join the Euro.. then the real fun begins.

Well, it does, depending on how many off-shore companies based in Luxembourg and The Netherlands one has (:poke: Messieurs J.C. Junker and J. Dijsselbloem)...

All I have to say is I don't like people wasting money (though there is a difference between frugality and abstinence) or ressources and that I condemn greed as well as institutional hypocrisy. There's much more to say but I'm afraid I'll go excessively political (nobody can dissociate economy from politics, no matter what they say...) and I don't wish to do so.  :drink:

I tend to find that the Rich, as Magnetus pointed out are not innocent, that a lot of the people on benefits/claimants/not working are also taking advantage of the system and that the middleish classes end up paying and supporting both..

From what I got (Jeez, British ENglish is a scary thing :D No offense meant  :salute:) one of the guys in the vid said... if they work more... they'll get just a tiny amount of money MORE, but this small amount would be enough for their benefits to be cut off. So, they're better off staying on benefits, getting a liittle less money instead of working their a**es off and being paid slightly more?

This is because more and more companies are offering lower wages and zero hour contracts. You may say 'so what' but workers here fought long and hard for good working conditions - companies never ever give up any concessions unless they absolutely have to (US civil rights activist Frederick Douglass said “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.”

These hard won rights have been eroded by the last few governments we've had. Why would you want to work for crappy wages on a zero hour contract for less money than you can get on welfare?

We have a tax credit system here which supports big corporations paying low wages by making up the wage - basically it's soSmurfpillsm for the rich and capitalism for the poor. We bailed out our banks, we prop up our royal family but all that is fine - just pick on the underclass and the foreigners.

Please don't watch those shows NNR - they're horrible and demonizing.

Great post, magentus  :salute:

Used car rates are higher.  Usually around 8% I think.  If you have bad credit though. you'll be paying upwards of 20%.

Pay day loans and other bad credit banking services just exploit the genuinely desperate and the genuinely stupid. The genuinely desperate need assistance not penalising, and the genuinely stupid need to not be able to make such choices/decisions.

The genuinely desperate need protecting from exploitation, and the rest of us need protecting from the genuinely stupid.

Another thing that surprised me in the very first vid I linked (I think I heard correctly) is that a guy said he'd started getting such loans at the age of 16. Isn't this too young to be allowed to do this?

Someone compared these loans to smoking, so if cigarettes and alcohol are not sold to people below 18 (here), how can a 16-year-old get such a loan?

Our capitalist system runs on debt. just look at the problems Greece are having at the moment. Even 'rich' countries like the US owe massive amounts in debt (lots of it to China).

If you get people locked into a cycle of debt early on you can keep them in it for the rest of their lives and the young people in this country have grown up with extremely aggressive marketing specifically designed to drag them into debt at the earliest possible opportunity.

If we don't continually consume new phones, cars, computers etc etc the system collapses, and very quickly. Big corporations (that will soon have the power to sue governments) depend on us going into debt to buy their products. It's that simple.

Payday loans exist purely to prop up Global corporations.

It absolutely isn't a conspiracy NNR - corporations exist to make profits and that's all. Unlike governments they are unelected but have reached such a level of power they can dictate to whole countries.

Profit is placed at the top of the list, way above ethics. Just take a look at the tobacco industry if you think all this is a conspiracy - the decades they have lobbied governments covering up the health issues with smoking and the 'right' to advertise lies. Once most of the developed world banned smoking, off the tobacco companies go to the developing countries to ply their trade.

If you're really interested in why payday loans exist, and it's a rabbit hole that will shock and disgust you, do some research on big corporations, TTIP https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transatlantic_Trade_and_Investment_Partnership, watch vids like 'The Corporation' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Corporation_%28film%29.

Oh, and people smoke because they're addicted. stopping an addiction is a difficult thing to do, especially if the rest of your life is completely smurf. I say this as a life time non-smoker.

If someone is doing something detrimental to their health and finances and doesn't make that apparently easy decision to stop you can bet they are addicted.

Compassion is what we need.

Totally with you on this one, magentus. :tu:

Compassion is what we need.

Have some more:  :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:

Somewhat relevant to the whole payday loan thing is Finland's commitment to basic income.  Would seem to be a sensible step towards eliminating the need for these sort of loans.

I love this idea of a basic income - one of our UK political parties have a citizens income as part of their manifesto and I think it's such a great idea.

It's really strange too how there's been no main stream media focus on how Iceland dealt with their banking debts and their approach to big business. Inspiring, but sadly, not good for big business. >:D

This is turning into a very interesting thread for me.
We often discuss this at work and at home.
My personal view is that it sometimes feels as though we are slipping back into the Victorian era. By that I mean certain family businesses dictate how we must live. Zero hour contracts, low paid jobs. Here on the UK labour is now so cheap that businesses couldn't give a damn if you stay or walk away.

Yet the paradox is that those of us that actually want to work and "stand on our own 2 feet" constantly have to accept the bullying, intimidation and low wages whilst others who have absolutely no shame simply carry on living on benefits.
Almost all my immediate family are "bent" pay zero tax, claim benefits and basically toss it off. Yet they are the ones going abroad this year.

I really wish the government would have the balls to stamp it all out once and for all.
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

I was having just this discussion with a younger colleague at work a few days ago,and how I've seen workers rights be eroded over the years I've been back in the UK. I think it's a side effect of our lack of political diversity, were add the main stream parties are safely tucked up in the pocket of corporate doners.

On many levels I'm becoming of a mind that American survivalist might be onto something...nice cabin in the woods, well away from society

Interesting Tosh. My feelings are that we have the top 1% earners dodging incredible amounts of tax, threatening to pull out of Britain if we ask for too many workers rights blah blah blah, and the 'underclass' of welfare dependents, who have never worked, and probably never will work in their life times.

The top 1% definitely cost us more in avoided taxes than those at the bottom, but nearly all of the genuine villification (from the tabloids, and shows like benefits street etc) is directed at the poor and vulnerable. I'm not saying that it's ok for people to live off welfare all their lives; I'm glad the welfare system is there - I've had to use it while working in care (like Zed) and getting paid an extremely low wage for long and hard hours, but it's always going to be open to abuse.

Tax credits are a way for our tax to support corporations to pay lower wages - their single aim is profit. We've all heard of the health problems suffered by workers who make Ipads etc but profit is the motive, not ethics. Corporations will get away with whatever they can.

The truth is too that nowadays there aren't many great jobs out there, and like you said, they are mostly low wage, zero hour contracts. Where is the incentive to come off welfare to be bullied in a crap job?

Our government has absolutely no interest in bringing any ethics or justice to these corporations because they are accepting money from them, and sit on their boards - massive conflicts of interest. In the interests of fairness, I think all the major parties are the same in the UK nowadays - I'm not having a dig at any one in particular.

Kirky, as much as I like the idea of going off grid and living in a shack, it shouldn't have to be an either, or choice - The only reason we can't all live safe and comfortable lives is that safe and comfortable people don't buy things to make themselves feel better, and workers with the sense of their own power are a hindrance to profit.
