In 1970, people on average, bought new cars that cost 1/3 their pay and houses that cost 3x their yearly salary. Cars and house have gone up in price by 10 fold. Wages have only gone up by a factor of 3. So now people buy cars that cost the same as their yearly salary and houses for 10X their salary. If houses were $90k and cars were $10k, people could save more and do better than the previous generation. We are addicted to consumerism. Low interest rates and a want it now attitude has had an effect. For those who place blame squarely on the shoulders of corporations, you need to look in a mirror. Most big companies are publicly traded, meaning you can buy a piece of the company. This also means you can help vote for the board and the policies. The board of each company do things for shareholders so they can keep their job. The same with politicians, you voted them in office. They represent you. They offer tax breaks to big companies or trade deals that are inequitable. Want things to change, speak up. If companies couldn't get visas to hire workers from other countries and instead had to spend money on training programs to train citizen for the jobs they have, it would make a difference. If we invested more money in education to ensure our kids can get a job out of high school, it would make a difference.College is not for everyone, but at the end of high school, graduating students should be able to obtain a job that can sustain them. I'm not talking them, a spouse and 4 kids. If you want 4 kids, then you need to be better at budgeting and have a job to support that. Payday loans are not new - look at pawn shops. I give you something and in return you give me money. If I want it back I pay you the money plus a percentage. The difference is in trading current assets for cash vs trading future labor. [/rant]
