Hey all,

I apologize... I shouldn't have started the thread.  I guess I wasn't versed enough that this is sorta a taboo topic here.  Please forgive my ignorance.

I guess the point I was trying to present... rather than a discussion on the pros/cons of gun/knife ownership was the extreme difference in cultures.  In the UK they are having discussions about the legality/necessity of owning or carrying knives while in the US I think this topic would be laughed at.

Similarly in the US we discuss gun rights while I think most UKers would think we're crazy to think the general population needs so many guns.

Again, sorry for stirring the pot.

I hope you won't, it would be very bad for your health.  ;)

Don't worry, I probably won't; violence is my very last resort.

I hope you didn't take my example personally. I would have said the same no matter who I was quoting. I was just discussing the fact that some laws may be wrong, for example because they are outdated or partial, and that exercising one's rights isn't always beneficial to society.

I have to add that not exercising our rights is the best way to lose them. :salute:

I don't actually like weapons - tools are fine.
Yes, I know what you're thinking... aren't they one and the same.

I think it all comes down to circumstances.
A little pocket knife be it an alox or climber is innocent enough to be used in almost any situation if it's regarded as merely a handy little tool.

But if ever I were threatened by one it might as well be a a huge broad sword
 - the implications are one and the same.

I've never been threatened by a knife in my life so really don't know how I'd react. But I do know that if anyone ever threatened my family with a knife... It wouldn't end well.....probably for me - I'm no mercenary!!

It's for that reason that I think knife crimes should carry very severe sentences.... Like 20yrs mandatory??
To get a black eye or thick lip is one thing, but to have to crawl for help whilst bleeding to death is entirely another.

I think we all understand that the primary issue is intent to harm, not the object with which the harm is done.

At least... I assume that's the case.

I just read about the 2014 Kunming attack in China. It sounds like they were using kitchen knives and meat cleavers, from other sources I read.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Kunming_attack

You simply cannot remove every implement that could potentially be used to harm another person, because (kindly pointed out repeatedly by pfrsantos), virtually ANYTHING can be used to kill people.

My go-to point when someone says we have to control X, is... swimming pools. One of the major causes of death in children under the age of 5 in the U.S. However, I must concede that my last attempt to smuggle a swimming pool into a nightclub went rather poorly.

Intruduce common sense, save a life. And keep the knife.  :D

I hate it when one retard ruins it for millions of other people.
It happened to a lot of country's and it will probably ruin even more to come.

Where are the times that a real gentleman carried a knife, respected it and used it properly.

Now the gentleman carries a smartphone and the criminals carry knifes.
Aaaaand there goes our hobby/edc tool

I really feel sorry for the English and Danish folks who have some of the strictest knife laws in the world.
And it proves that restricting knifes doesn't help, because England has a lot of knife related incidents.

Its not the knife, it is the person using it.

Hm, this got me thinking. What is really the best way to be a good knife ambassador towards the typical slightly hysterical activist who "knows someone who knows someone who was assaulted with a knife" and bullies people with emotional outrage? Provoking them can be fun, but really plays into their hands. I suspect the extreme type I draw a picture of here can't be educated by people like us, at least not easily. So that leaves us with educating the majority who really don't care much about knives one way or the other. Teach them knives are basic tools. Animals feel, learn, use tools, build shelter, but the human animal is the only one who made a knife; actually something like 2.2 million years ago, IIRC. May be some newer finds are even older. I sometimes look at playgrounds and find it sad probably none of the adults watching have a good knife, in case a kid starts getting choked by their own clothes hanging from a slide or similar (no, the type of accident is absolutely not hypothetical).

I've carried knifes of one kind or another daily for about 25 years and have never ever thought about them as anything other than a tool .there should be tighter controls on idiots not knifes!
I am and always have been a law abiding citizen  and should be allowed to carry what I like.

I dare anyone try to take my guns from me.

In my opinion, that attitude doesn't do a lot for your cause.

Sounds like you're threatening violence, which when the topic is gun control...
That is fine.
If gun control folks like to have a meaningful conversation, I am all ears.
If they want to come take my freedom away with force, they shall be resisted.

BUT SHE STARTED IT!!!!

I get the feeling someone hasn't been reading the posts in this thread attentively.  ::)

Care to explain who is "she" and how did "she" start it, please?

If anything, in a thread called "Save a life, surrender your knife" the OP posted a link about police in Britain collecting pointy knives and went on to comment about Europeans' views on firearms ownership in the US, thus derailing his/her thread off the bat

I guess this won't help..........

I just have to comment on the stupidity of it all.

What is the difference between being attacked with a machete or a sharpened butter knife?

IMO how you go about defending yourself, because either will kill you very quickly, same as a half-brick...

Speaking of self-defence, I never see pepper spray mentioned here?  I was told pepper spray used >:D semi-offensively   is considered GBH locally....
I got a big can just after moving back to the city, and I plan on emptying it (mostly on taxis) before it expires next year

I don't believe in pepper spray. Not anymore.

Some time ago, I took a trip to India. I heard some scary stories, about some places where tourists were mugged. I got some pepper spray at the airport and went to the hotel. On the way there, a bunch of kids surrounded me, asking for money, tugging at my clothes and luggage. I managed to take the pepper spray out of the pocket and sprayed them. They stopped, look at each other and run away. I got to the hotel, left my luggage and went out for a walk. Sure enough, the kids that attacked me earlier were waiting for me just around the corner. They lunged at me as soon as they saw me. Once again, I took out the can of pepper spray and pointed at them. They smilled, took out lunchboxes from their pockets and backpacks and started putting them in front of the pepper spray, using it as condiment. That can only lasted 3 minutes...
