What's Your Prevailing Passion?
on: July 06, 2015, 05:52:16 PM
So... a hard question, which of these types is the best of the best, the one and only for you? The thing you love, the thing you cherish... :D

We seem to love all of these and everyone seems to have multiple samples of each of them, but still, which one is your worst sin  >:D :pok:

I vote for flashlights
Then SAKs or regular folders, can't decide  :ahhh

Still, one option only, sorry, I'm cruel  >:D

Multitools for me, be it my Swisstool, my Spirit, my Rebar, my ST300 ...  they are what I like best.  My Swisschamp comes close, very close ...  but I could only pick one answer in the poll so multitools it is  8).

Predictable replies from dks and pfrsantos  :D :D

For me, none of the categories outweigh any of the others. Slipjoint folders aren't very good for seeing in the dark, machetes aren't great for opening cans, blah blah blah....

I pick the tool to suit the job, and have too many of all of them

I don't have a ton of them, but I LOVE FIXED BLADES!!!!!  :dd:   Since I was young, I've loved the damn things!  I don't know what it is about them, but if forced to only keep one category of knives, MT or lights, fixed blades would win.

Of those listed, SAKs.

Let me see if I can remember the last handful of MTs I've purchased, most recent first...

Vic Explorer, (Trade) Leatherman Rebar, Vic Huntsman, Vic Super Tinker, Vic Climber, Vic Climber, Vic Small Tinker...

So, as a pattern, at the moment it'd be SAKs. I'm sure it'll swing back around at some point.

And drinking beer. :D

When I joined here I'd have said multis. But a combination of having tried pretty much anything that's taken my fancy, and largely settled on self modded MTs;and a change in work use needs,MTs have lost their emphisis

SAKs on the other hand have become ever more important.

Like the other bits and bobs, but SAKs rule them all!
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

@kirk

Exactly :D I also came because of the MTs, looking for info and so on.. and then when I had lots of MTs, SAKs, fixed blades aaaaaaaaaaaaaand flashlights, it turned out I don't really have much of real use for the MTs.... so I just have few of them.

It would probably have to be bicycles so far. I guess I'd have to say after that knife based mt's. I have owned a couple Leathermans and the pliers based mt didn't do much for me ergonomically. Now all I own are a C33T, Hercules and a Tinker.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

Was into SAKs, then I found out about the LM Surge and SOG multis. My SAK collection has been fading away since. I always have and always will love fixed blades and big folders.
My greatest love is the outdoors and bushcrafting.

Mountain Bikes, that's generally what's got me outside and into the wilderness. That's how I ended up in the industry I work in, and the reason I spend way too much time alone in the woods.

Multitools and knives just make my life easier, and I blame joining this forum (mainly after researching Skinths) for developing my interest further. I've been here a month and just bought a rebar for its plier head and Awl...

Bug-out/extended survival bag/gear....with a very strong focus on fixed blade knives. :D

I've been called a pyromaniac, on a brief hiatus since I have many methods of making fire.....and friction fire lighting has kicked my ass so far. Many hours, many woods, much smoke but no fire!

More than buying and collecting, I'm working toward making knives.

I like tools. Things made of brass, stuff that don't use batteries.

Fly fishing, casting, fly tying will be my passion for the rest of my life, even if right now my fishing is extremely limited.  I was blessed to spend 1000's of hours fishing on foot, kayak and pontoon boat since 2002, I was greedy with my fishing time, 90% solo, 100% my own flies, and I've caught everything in my local fresh waters on fly, so I'm okay with limiting my fishing to worthwhile opportunities for the moment.

Without doubt..it's multitools for me!!
I'm just fascinated by them. SAKs have been around for donkey's years whereas the MT  in its modern incarnation is still relatively in its infancy. I just love how they've evolved during the past 30yrs!!

Really can't imagine what the multitool will become over the next 30yrs - I hope I'm still around to find out  :tu:
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

I love playing with Multitools, but I very rarely find I need pliers - and when I do, I tend to grab a normal set of pliers so I can don't worry about damaging the MT.

Whereas a SAK is much more portable for me, and I use them a ton!

Some very interesting answers :D :tu:

I never thought about MTs vs SAKs in terms of "something new and fancy" and "something that's been around for ages". Although it's totally true, I found about both at about the same time, lol

I voted SAKs, but I have a strong fascination for good pencils and notebooks. Not something I collect as such, but... Well, I have more than I need. At least I can ignore the problems of "feathering" with my notebooks, as opposed to those who prefer fountain pens.

I voted Mt:s as I spend more money and energy on them now. Mt:s has been an interest since I got my first Mr Pinchy in the early 90s.
But at the time it was folders that were my main focus when I discovered this place. And we all know how that works. ;)
