British Army Jungle Survival Knife Mod 4
on: July 30, 2015, 11:20:19 AM
I tried a few searches and could not find much on this blade.

Does anyone (Brit Military? General enthusiast?) have any input on this bad boy?

I am considering getting one of these for my bush knife.

It looks big, simple, and tough (I managed to break two of Bear Grylls personally designed ultimate survival knives. I wonder if the bog-standard british issue is better :P )

Oh, a pic, so we all know what I am talking about.

I have the standard hardwood scaled version rather than this fibre scaled one. It's your typical sharpened prybar, and quite a beastie. It is heavy due to being 6mm thick, and focuses more on impact and abuse resilience more than edge retention, being hardened in the low 50s on the Rockwell scale.

The sheath is utterly horrendous, and if you plan on carrying this rather than using it as a tool in a home/vehicle, you would be advised to make something with better retention. The strap is high on the belt loop and allows the blade to slide out a good way.

I suppose it depends on the application as to whether this would be a good tool for you, but you'll be really hard pressed to break it, and even if you damage the edge it will resharpen easily. This really is a hammer, axe, prybar type knife as is meant to be used in ways you should never consider using a normal knife.

Oh, and expect this tool to arrive with you in a "semi-finished" condition. The finish is very agricultural, and the scales will be oversized. Some work with some abrasives will be required to get the handle to your liking, and also to get the edge to your liking. However, once that's done, you'll have a knife you'll never break no matter what you do to it.

Oh, and fun can be had using it as a throwing knife too  :D Dig, bash, chop, cut, pry, hammer, lever, and throw to your hearts content.... just watch it for corrosion  ;)

+1to what 50ft said.

I've used mine for hammering, chopping, slicing and digging. It is VERY heavy. but you cannot break it. However hard you try.

You can trim the scales to suit your hand and I would agree with 50ft about the sheath - make a new one. I also removed the guard on mine - I saw no use for it.

I find it too heavy for prolonged use to be honest - my Mora is easier on the wrists.

Cool, thanks for the input :)

I am not generally a big fan of military stuff, for a few reasons (looking like a knob being one. Government contracts not generally being for the best quality being another), but this looks fairly plain and definitely not tacticool.

No worries, I have a decent carry set up that does not rely on manufacturers ability to design sheaths for success.

Huh. My mora lives in my tool box.

Perhaps it should come out and see the world with me,

If you want skinning, gutting and whittling on your list of chores, then this item need pairing with something more dextrous. There is no finesse with this, and it should be used for all the ugly nasty rough arsed jobs. If you are making a new sheath for it to carry as I mentioned before, consider having the sheath able to carry a SAK or smaller fixed blade too, maybe a skeleton type knife?

Definitely - a Mora is all you need knife wise, and they love being out and about.  :tu:

Hi

Been down with a stomach bug for 2 days and watched too many YT videos......saw one on this knife.
The guy did a bit of effort, and the results looked good in testing.
Not sure, but I think the channel was Simon's Discoveries

A bit of trivia for those who are interested - this is the knife that inspired Ethan Becker's design now known as BK-2. And that as you all know inspired a slew of other holy smokes thick knives

A quick google search found this shop, that has them quite cheap.
http://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/shop/survival-accessories/pocket-and-survival-knives/british-army-style-heavy-weight-1058858.html
They wont ship to Norway, but maybe they will to Australia?
