Thanks Farmer X. I did. :) From a birch "burl", I believe, they are called? :dunno: Those stumpy protrudings some birch trees have.

They are really tough and hard to carve, but therefore also doesn't split. I think it's because such a "burl" is created by several small branches growing into each other so that the tree fibers are going in all possible directions in one lovely big mess. It is tough, alright.  :o It's quite old, and I have used it a lot. As a bonus they give a nice natural pattern in the carving when it's done. :)
