Christmas morning in October! (new scales!!!)
on: October 23, 2015, 04:47:26 AM
So my new scales arrived today from detron, and I'm just going to go through my day and tell this story.
I've had three midterms in the last two weeks, and this week I'm currently in the process of figuring out what the hell I'm taking next semester. I've been about a ten out of ten on the stress scale for the past two weeks.
It didn't help that my beautiful Super Tinker's smooth scales, which I often sit and rub with my thumb when I'm stressed, were ruined in some nice boiling water... Le sigh.
So I get out of class today and get to the mail, where detron had sent me some new scales. The box was pretty heavy. I open it and find:
-The scales, shining beautifully, completely flawless.
-Additional tweezers and toothpick
-A gorgeous and bright Rayovac flashlight, perfect for my purse when winter rain and snow FINALLY decide to arrive here in Cali, ending the terrifying menace that has been fire season '15...
-A gently used Classic SD. I do a lot of embroidery, and the scissors are the BEST embroidery scissors I've used. And I've used expensive embroidery scissors. This will be my EDC for a bit, methinks.
-A CLIMBER!!! Dear god this thing is GREAAT. It's just an A+ knife, the same as my Super Tinker but with the addition of a corkscrew rather than the slightly weirdly uniquely positioned Phillips. I adore it, it looks so good next to my old faithful and the little guy.
I put the scales on my old faithful. It's funny, with the addition of the new scales, the metal looks so great and clean. Admittedly, it probably just looks that way because I boiled the damn thing, but I've got pride of ownership again. The scale transfer was simple and easy. Took 'em off with a knitting needle and a butter knife, put 'em on with my bare hands. I am woman, hear me roar. :viking:

So I sit here right now, stress level lower, with my first little collection, and I know we on here like to blame Kirky when we end up collecting tons of SAKs. I won't be blaming Kirky when I look back on this, three years in the future, with twenty SAKs stacked up all around me. I'll be proudly blaming detron. I'm a future Crazy SAK Lady. :tu:
Pics later..?

Detron is amazingly generous and he deserve praise.  :tu:

Its funny that you think in three years from now you will only have 20 SAK's.   I think you missed a zero.  :D

Welcome to the forum by the way.

I also install scales with my hands only, and so far have had no issues doing it that way.

I am glad this was able to help with the stress level, I know what what midterms and finals are like, and it is important to mange stress to avoid cracking up.

enjoy,  we wait for your collection to grow :dd:

what I did was nothing more than most members here would have done,  I just happen to be in a position to do so due to having scales when she needed them.

I have been on the receiving end more times than I can count, and as great as that feels, the giving side is better.
I guess that makes what I did a selfish action

Since I totally spaced on a major assignment and had to bullsh--er, carefully plan and type it all blessed weekend, I didn't get a chance to get my camera out, pop the glamor lens on and give them what they deserve until late on Sunday. I had 'em all in my pockets and my camera around my neck, turned the doorknob and it came off in my hand. The screw that held the knob on came clean out. The Climber was perfect for the job!
So, without further ado, my new squad of knives!

Yeah, I'm starting to get a bit misty-eyed when I think about buying my next knife... Probably for my twentieth in a few short months. Happy birthday, me. Love, me.
I've fooled around with my mom's circa '91 Explorer and I like it a lot so that's an option, but I'm a bit attracted to a few other knives, too many to list here really. The question is: Do I continually ramp up my collection, going from my relatively humble 3-layers to a 4 and a 5 like Detron recommends, or do I go for broke and buy the biggest, most badass knife a girl could want? I think a SwissChamp is calling my name, but whether I would use the thing is another question. Sigh.

It does! In fact, snow is how George Clooney keeps his lawn green and the crops irrigated, and part of the reason this drought is terrifying is that there was no snowpack this year.
But yeah, the north state is a whole other world in terms of climate. We have pine trees and lakes and rivers and snow chains on our tires. People ski and everything! That's the great thing about California is that you have the California people think of (palm trees, Pamela Anderson, avocados, bottled water) and then there's entire other ecosystems and climates in the same state. Thus, you can grow oranges in the warmth and the sun of South Cal, and up here your biggest crop is a certain herb. When October rolls around in my parts you start to smell what my dad used to call the "Invisible Mountain Skunk" when I was three.
TLDR; Yep, Cali has snow. Pretty nifty.

"Invisible Mountain Skunk" lol! Where I live there's been a few ads on TV lately promoting California tourism. I might just have to visit one of these days.

you need a sticker off of a new touchscreen laptop for your Tinker

I think what I'm going to do before spending any money on another knife is get a feel for it, hold it in my hands... In other words, not just buy online. I have delicate little lady fingers, so whether a SC would fit in my hands and not get dropped on one of my delicate little lady toes is a serious question.
I'm liking the craftsman a loooot, especially if I ever get into woodworking/carving like I've been intending to for years. Though as far as carving goes, the little bit I've done works fine with just my Super Tinker.
Tough choices....
Hmm I didn't see any Alox in your pictures.
I'm sure I will own and love an alox SAK someday, but for now I'm good with the *air quote fingers* "standard" scales. Someday, though....
