Choice of color can be important
on: October 26, 2015, 05:11:36 PM
Here, I have a selection of Swiss Army Knives (and a copy I'm carrying for a challenge).

Vivid colors of Red, stay-glo yellow, yellow/black, and one with sapphire scales.

With the exception of the sapphire, the colors were selected for their ability to stand out. If you drop a tool, or set it down in the wild, the vivid colors make spotting it easier.

I told a story of dropping a BO MT in the grass and having a hard time finding it.

I agree with vivid color tools especially for trekking about or even yard work at home.

I commented on this to a friend a short time ago.  I try to pick scale colors that will stand out if dropped whether it is in the summer or the winter time so I can up with the yellow or sapphire.  :)

Depending on when I am out like now in the fall, the red or ruby would not work that well at all here.

I almost always use red in an urban environment for if I would deploy a black or silver alox SAK it could possibly disturb some people which can be another reason to use bright colors.

I like to add a brightly coloured lanyard. Preferably from a cord that has reflective tracers in it for easy nighttime location with a flashlight.

You think it's bad now? Imagine at night!

You might catch some glare off some of the metal, but I think Moonglow or reflective scales would be a lot easier!

Good point Lynn. I never considered autumnal change in my orange themed "outdoors" tool array.....

Transclucent scales with a reflector in it would work great at night. Just shine a light over it, and it will wink back at you.

IIRC the explorer Benedict Allen made this point in an interview I once read many years ago.  For that reason he carries a white scaled SAK.  Of course if it's snowing that's a terrible idea. :D

I PERSONALLY think, overall, stay-glo is the best. The photos I took above just do NOT capture how bright that yellow is in direct light or shade, and for night spotting... it glows.

However, that doesn't necessarily help you in the autumn, where there are a lot of bright, popping yellows in leaf clutter in broad daylight. Still... no color will work in every situation.

Also... man... that sapphire looks GREAT in direct sunlight.  :dd:

This thread is one reason I don't feel the need to get camouflaged scales and my SAKs in Black don't tend to see much of the countryside. But jelly red or blue? They do look great in the sunshine. But yellow ? Now yellow is fine for custard or life jackets but that's about it ... ;)

In my mind a SAK has to have red handles. OK, silver Alox works, too.

Ok I'll run with that - the photo's don't do those scales justice ... if only you could get custard that glows in the dark. That'd be the kinda magic I'd buy  :D

How about Tritium inserts under silver tech or the translucent scales.

I don't like red celllidor scales, or the newer silver alox. :-\  I'm not sure why, maybe I just think they're too common.  Black, yellow and white are my preferred cellidor colours, and black for alox.
