GI Tanto rehab
on:
November 04, 2015, 08:12:04 PM
Drunken person repeatedly stabbed this through the side of a shipping container, when that wasn't fun anymore it was chucked at trophies.......so if the missed the bone, horn and wood, it hit the container...or the cement floor
Stripped, choil and guards rounded, micarta scales fitted and gun blued:

Thanks, but sadly not....
The owner tried to mod it as well, used a sanding disk on a angle grinder to remove the coating on the edge bevel and the swedge.
He was a bit heavy handed on the swedge, it was over to the one side and I fixed that, and he managed to round the tip nicely.
In this process I learned about lifting the tip before reaching the end of the belt to prevent this
Rounded tip, slight bend just before the grips, few chips on the blade and the scales came of, half the hardware missing in the process.
I've been to the spot where this happened, saw the damage to the container and the trophies, and it's simply amazing how little damage the was......
Stupid, idiotic thing to do with a knife that proves nothing........hopefully for he rest of it's life it can just be a knife

I've come sort of full circle now, my own GI Tanto was the first knife I modified by adding red (plastic) liners and texture to the grips, this all led to making my first micarta.
A lot of money for tools later and some practice I've upped my game a bit, so my own GI Tanto is on the list about 2 projects from now.
I'm thinking all black micarta with built-in orange liners, and then I want to try an Impala horn texture.

The way I see it, nothing magical about the GI Tanto, just 1075 with a fit to purpose heat treat, and a great price that begs for it to be modified.
Added to that a good sheath.
I have to fight with myself not to buy more to try out all the ideas I have, just check google images of all the mods out there...
Go for it

Oh, I'd love to if I hadn't other priorities, like diaper fund and loads of expenses. Plus, I want to check what I'm buying when possible.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention though
