Folders with good striking pommels
on: October 29, 2015, 02:45:45 AM
Are there any folders out there that have striking pommels that could be used to hammer in tent stakes, etc. It looks like the Cold Steel AK 47 could be an option, but wondering if anything else is out there. Seems like a handy feature for an EDC knife.

Evil510 made a cool striking end for a skeletool,  but you couldn't hammer tent stakes with it.

If you can find an Emerson HMMV-K it might handle it if the ground isnt to hard. But it begs the question why?

I sometimes carry a Leatherman MUT and the hammer is handy, so just curious if the same hammer functionality can be accomplished by a folder

If you want to break glass or hand out some non-lethal hurt I have a few suggestions........but for the purpose you mention and for the sake of my hand, 9 times out of 10 I'll reach for a rock instead

Got ya. When I mentioned a tent stake it was just an example.  What I meant was that i'd like for it to be able to hammer stuff...not necessarily nails....less delicate, general hammering. Paints cans, or anything else that needs a couple of whacks.

Interesting. Now you've got me watching used Buck 112s on eBay.

Since there is no clip,  I would carry the 112 in my back pocket to the side of wallet/handkerchief...seems like it might be a little big for this, so not yet sure if it would work for me. Not in to belt sheaths. Digging the recommendation though.

I wouldn't have thought of that, but there you go!
Your paint can was a much better example, and a 110 should do, or for that matter a host of knives built on that pattern.

Other than that my first thought was "it will be some Cold Steel".

I'm still a newbie. Can you elaborate on what some other knifes are that are built on the same pattern?

Leaving out the cheap & nasty ones I loved as a kid, Puma has(had?) a bunch of knives with that same basic layout, metal pommel and bolsters with various types of scales.

I have owned an cold steel ak 47. The pommel was pretty good although i never used it in combat. I used it as an hammer a couple of times. But it was made from aluminium so it was damaged pretty fast.
My new EKA swede 8 has a lanyard hole, it is not designed to be a pommel, but it does the job pretty good. In my opinion just as good as the ak 47.
The pommel on the mini ak 47 was not an succes because it did not protrude from my hand when holding the knife.

It seems like some folders with glass breakers have solid butts with thicker scales to make them a bit more solid. Wondering if getting one of these and  then grinding down the point is the way to go.  Am I overlooking obvious problems with this approach? Thinking the Schrade SCH 502 might be a good fit.

I know it won't be able to hammer much, but I like the idea of being able to strike stuff with the butt of my EDC knife. Feel like it could be handy, and doesn't come with much cost (besides a few extra ounces)

Some of the knives with glass breakers have removable glass breakers. Some to make them exchangeable, some come with an additional plug for people who dont like sharp edges at the back of their knife.

I don't care for the finish, clip, or locking mechanism on this one from Schrade, but the glass breaker is basically a bolt and could be flattened to provide a striking surface similar to what Kampfer did for his Skeletool hammer.

My current plan is to get the SCH 502, either unscrew the glass breaker or grind it down and then use a tap to add some threading to the butt (hopefully the former), get a piece of metal with  recessed holes (probably an L bracket), shape the metal to fit the butt, attach the metal using a screw that fits the hole in the butt and the recessed opening in the bracket, add some adhesive along the rest of the butt. Finding that perfect screw may prove difficult. That's the latest idea anyway. Will post in the Mod Squad forum if I end up doing it.

Thanks. Didn't know that. Will be sweet if this is the case.

I wouldn't try bashing with a Buck 110 or 112, the brass isn't likely to handle the impact well. I don't know for sure, but I can't say I'd recommend it

Do you not carry a hatchet? I'd use that instead if you're out
