The Taylor Brand Schrades that are made in China are not made by the people that build the Rough Riders. While some of the patterns produced by both will be similar.....you will find the same when comparing some of these to the likes of Case and other bigger brands (alot of them are designed from original classic patterns from these bigger name brands).

Also, the quality from Taylor in their Schrade line is consistantly not as good as that of the Rough Riders, nor of many other import lines.

dks,

The Steel Warriors I haven't been all that impressed with myself. Some are quite good but they don't quite compare overall to the Rough Riders. But, I do have two Frost Family Brand Trappers that are of the same build as the Steel Warriors (same materials, same patterns, built by the same people) and they are as good or better than most of my Rough Riders. But these I believe are the exception, not the rule.......particularly when speaking of Frost Cutlery.

As to the Buck Creeks you mention, what is wrong with the ones you got?

I picked up a pair of Buck Creek Large Stockmans a while back and was quite impressed by their quality considering the price.........

Very good F&F on these two.........

And while German made they ain't quite up to the level of Friedrich Olbertz or Boker, their price makes up for the slight difference.

part 2, The problems...

A crack, scales falling off (steel warrior), off centre blade, bolt sticking out, flaking Buck Creek, soft, flaky stag buck creek.

As I said, I am in contact with the seller and he is more than happy to replace any of them... I am trying to see if postage cost will be covered.
The stag on the buck creek is very similar to some stag I got on some, much cheaper, schrade deerslayers, i.e. not the most brilliant quality.
I have had problems with scales on buck and RR before so I know these occur with other, good quality, slipjoints.
For me, the Buck Creek are reasonably expensive knives (luxury items where looks and finish are very important) so I expect a much better level of finish than with the chinese made knives. I think Buck Creek and to the extend that I know, German Bulldog knives are not of the most brilliant quality, they seem to be below, similarly priced Case knives, from my limited experience...

Zed, I still cant see the pictures...

I am reading the text on the screen and looking at the pictures on the mobile.... :D

What do you think of the stag, especially the bottom of the dirtbuster? Should I complain? I am still not happy with the "look" of them, so I will definitely exchange the trapper, whatever.

OK, on the same topic :> Schrade, I am sure one day all these will be appreciated more and worth a looooot of money!

These were bought because they were interesting, colourwise, and I did not at the time have any of the brand.

The deerslayers are OK, supposed to be handmade..., but still not as good as the RR ones. They are my retirement investment..

The stag scales are not totally aligned with the liners, you can feel the liner sticking out, but the rest are better, though you have the odd bolt sticking a bit too high.

The small trapper and the large stockman are not bad, a bit of blade play but useable.

The red peanut(?) and the sodbuster (like a Jr Case but a quarter of the price) have a very rough opening feel, they have not been finished properly. I have filed them down a bit and improved the movement but they really need to be taken apart and sorted.

The large stockman and the small peanut have quite interesting scales, very colourful, and I just had to have a yellow sodbuster, but did not want to buy another case (cost).

dks,

The Stag on that Steel Warrior is just plain screwed all to hell, that is just horrible. Definitely that one has to go. Can't see anything wrong with the Dirtbuster, might be missing something.

Anyway, if you are unhappy with any of them for any reason, if you can, I say return them. Don't go about with things you don't want. Be happy with what you spend your money on.

Alrighty, just got a slew of new ones myself. Well, new to me anyway. All of these are Queen-built Robesons. Production of these was around 2004, short run and long discontinued SFO material.

Robeson Rootbeer Bone Improved Muskrat:

Robeson Caramel Wormgroove Bone Improved Muskrat:

Robeson Antique Green Bone Improved Muskrat:

Robeson Raspberry Bone Improved Muskrat:

These are all 4" in the closed position and built on a slight serpentine style frame. The only real difference between them all is that the Rootbeer Bone and Caramel Wormgroove versions have rounded bolsters and the Antique Green and Raspberry Bone versions have squared bolsters.

These are single backspring Muskrats and all feature the same build......nickle/silver bolsters and shield, brass liners and pins, 420HC Stainless blades, Shuredge blade etch and tang stamp, and all have a virtually impeccable level of Fit and Finish. The only real fault I can find in any of them is on the Caramel Wormgroove Bone one. It's backspring is noticably lighter than on the other three. Not weak, but the others are rather stout and this one is just easier. Also the main Clip Point blade on this one has a ever so slight lateral play in it. Outside of that can't find a fault.

Been a while now since I have been able to add any new Robesons to my collection as they are made in low numbers and in a "on again/off again" fashion, and they only show up here and there. Glad I got the opportunity on these, and at the price I got them for which was just sweet!  :tu:

I'm not a fan of typical muskrats, but I do like these "improved" patterns with with the Wharncliffe.  That rootbeer is beautiful!  It's my favorite of all the frames too, serpentine with the rounded bolsters.  :tu:

NutSAK,

I've never been one for the typical Muskrats either, that was until I got that Stag one from GEC. I do prefer the blade set-up of the Improved versions, they are like the old Hawbaker Specials that CSC is currently making now. And GEC has a version in their Furtaker line which now has me very interested.

But with these, for me, it was more that they are Robesons than anything else.

2xtap, these look really nice, I am beginning to appreciate, good, jigged bone more lately!
The caramel and the improved are very unusual and interesting.

Thanks for sharing.

Maybe I need to save some money and get something really well made, cut my losses.

Though I can still not see the main pictures on the screen, I can now click on the thumbnail, below the picture, and see them on image shack  :tu: Thanks.

Oh, I am sending the Steel warrior and the trapper back, keeping the rest.

I sure wish you hadn't mentioned the CSC....   ::)  Luckily it appears to be a bit out of my price range.

I'm impressed with the many different patterns that GEC offers, but I find it strange that they have a muskrat and a trapper both in the Furtaker line with the same clip/wharnie combo.  Also, I think true muskrats should have a single spring, not two, just like a true whittler should have two, not three.  That's just me, I suppose.  ;)

I damn near bought that green Tidioute Furtaker Trapper Mike had in the "EDC" section, but someone else got to it before I made up my mind.  :-[  Oh well, another knife I didn't need!  :D  I bought that red Humpback CV "whittler" instead.

When I first saw it I was thinking kind of the same thing, but more reptilian. Kind of makes me think of my SARPNT from GEC.

Yeah, the CSC Hawbakers are somewhat overpriced. And considering for the same money you can get a Furtaker from GEC that's alot more knife with a superior build.

Not sure why you find it weird that two different patterns would have the same blades, is quite common actually. You can find Jacks, Barlows, and Gunstocks with the same blades. Standard Trappers and Moose patterns with the same blades.

Too bad you missed out on that particular Furtaker. They are sweet knives. If you ever get the hankering for one again...........

.......I highly recommend getting one.  ;)

The only way you can get a slipjoint built better is going custom!  :tu:

I acquired another 1970 Case today--a Mini Coke Bottle dressed in red jigged bone.  After carrying my Barlow for a few days, I'm really starting to like the chrome vanadium Cases, and they just don't seem to be able to make bone look this good nowadays:

I'm really starting to prefer buying "used" slips like this on Ebay.  I quote "used" because the knife pictured above hasn't actually been used.  The reason I like to buy them this way is that they're usually described in good detail, unlike a new knife that you would buy from a internet retailer.  The sellers of the used knives will many times show pictures of the knives at many angles and will describe the snap of the blades, whether there's any lateral play, etc.  If the seller is honest, you know exactly what you're getting.  There are no brick-and-mortar knife stores near me where I can handle a knife before I buy it, so auctions like this are one of my most reliable sources.

I agree, I got a couple of knives that could have easily been sold as new, without the original packaging, for a much lower than the new price... If I find a seller like that I go back again and support him.  :tu:

I also had people using the "make me an offer" setting declining to sell a used item for a lower than the asking  price, even after I pointed out that, that item could have been bought, for new, cheaper.. ???

I described this as a bone-handled coke bottle, but is this bone or delrin?  Due to the variation in color across the pile-side scale, I assumed it as bone but I know that Delrin was substituted sometimes in the 1970's when bone was in short supply.

Thanks.

NEVER be ashamed of your accent and idioms.  To me, it's one of the most enjoyable things about visiting a new place.

When we moved to Baltimore (pronounced Balmer), the local dialect was one of the few things we enjoyed.

So, PROP'S to the West Virginian accent.  :tu:

NutSAK,

From the pics looks like bone to me. Their delrin is usually pretty consistant in color, even on the older models. The slight fade you have in this one towards the bolsters strikes me as bone.
