Traditional style multi-blade knife?
on: December 10, 2015, 11:24:39 AM
I'm looking for recommendations for a traditional style multi blade pocket knife but don't know too much about them.

Requirements are:
  • Minimum two blades, one of which is a sheepsfoot
  • Prefer stainless, carbon steel is ok
  • Slip joint, sub-3" - UK legal
  • Synthetic or wood handles (don't like the idea of bone or horn)
  • Upto £50, preferably closer to £30

Currently looking at:
Rodgers 67W: http://www.heinnie.com/joseph-rodgers-67w
Case yellow CV medium stockman with punch: http://www.wrcase.com/knives/images/054.jpg
Taylor's eye witness spear/pen

Any other ideas? :)

Case is a fairly cafe bet, and Taylors are quite good too. Rodgers can be hit and miss on quality, and can suffer spongy feeling springs. A Wrights only do carbon, but don't appear to offer a suitable pattern.

Would a wharncliffe do instead of a sheepsfoot? If so check out the Case Seahorse Whittler. I'm not sure what scale options they do

Wow.  Lots to look at there. :tu:

Still reckon a medium Stockman would be the Case to go for, but the Seahorse Whittler can be had in black G10 which is quite nice (thanks Al :tu:).  Think I prefer a clip point or sheepsfoot large blade though.  Maybe the Tan Zytel Stockman as it's not too expensive, or a black Medium Jack (#087)

Arthur Wright do have the Spear and Pen knife, but I don't like the filework and it's a bit pricey.

Heinnie have got a Buck Canoe and a Stockman 301 which look nice too.

Heinnie do have a Rough Rider Stockman for £11, which has got to be worth trying for that price: http://www.heinnie.com/rough-rider-old-yellow-large-stockman

Glad you mentioned that on Chris! I hate saying this but,if you can't get to see them first, don't buy a Case! If you get a good one, they're really good, but there's no firm guarantee of getting a good one!

If you get a dodgy RR,well,it's a tenner! Also HH do the RR Stockman kit...

Also, the China Bucks are good. As good as the USA made,at a fraction of the cost. There's a large and a medium(can't remember the numbers right now),I'd reckon the medium is the one to go for.

The RR Barlow for a tenner is just unbeatable.

I did a big test/review thread on trad folders last year, might be worth a look?
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

:tu: Thanks Kirky.  That kit looks like fun, but I've got enough things in my to do pile that it probably wouldn't get made for quite a while.  I did see your slippie test, very useful thanks!

I reckon I'll get the RR Stockman and see if I like the pattern.

Buck Stockman I would recommend either of these.
Model# 301 is USA made 420HC steel
Model# 371 would be China made 420J2 steel
Blades Modified Clip: 2 ¾" Spey: 2" Sheepsfoot: 2." Both great quality and lifetime warranty.

I would concur. Or perhaps the 303 if a bit smaller closed length is desired. Iconic knife models.

Speaking for myself, I'd go with the US made models. But I've seen good reviews of the offshore made ones.

Both great knives.  For the money, the 371 is excellent.  I actually did a comparison between the 301 and 371, let me see if I can find the thread when I'm at a computer.

Bit late in reading the question, but the RR Stockman is exactly where my mind went to when I read your criteria.

I had seen that one and it was on my short list, thanks Al.  :tu: I reckon now that a large blade with some belly on it and a small sheepsfoot would be the best combination for me (and it's got bone handles anyway).

Buck 371 it is. :tu:  Got one in a trade with Zed.  Very nice knife - a little longer than expected but slips in my pocket nicely.  Well finished too.
