Really a stupid question, but you guys are used to that from me by now.

Want to get something for my dad that's thoughtful, I'm short of cash so I thought something with a little elbow grease added would still be thoughtful. My plan is to get an Opinel, sand, etch, and refinish the handle. Now the question.

I like dealing with Amazon, they have the NO. 6 for 11 bucks with free shipping. Is the 6 a reasonably useful size? I have and love the 8, didn't know if going to the 6 would be too much of a drop.

Having had the 6 I'd say it's fine.  I now have the 8 and like the size better.  The 7 might be a good in between size.  I guess, as we all say "depends" on what you think he'll use it for.

The hand finish is a great idea regardless of what size you choose.

I think the #6 is a really nice sized blade, but the back corner at the end of the knife digs into the hand a bit and needs sanding off. However, when you get a handle large enough that you don't need to do this, I feel the blade gets a little bit too long and also a little thin for it's length (unless you're using it as a steak knife). Depends on the tastes/preferences of the individual, but i think a #7 is about perfect if you're prepared to work on the handle  :salute:

They actually have a 9 for 11.95. Honestly, chances are the knife will be more for looking nice than for heavy use. So really, which makes a better canvas for a skill-less artist. I might go with the 9.

I have a #6 and #8.  The #8 fills my hand better, due to the larger handle.  That being said, the #6 is a great EDC sized knife.

Personally the 6 is my favorite Opinel.  Large enough to handle most jobs, small enough to not be too bulky in the pocket.
There's no such thing as "Too pretty to carry".  There's only "Too pretty NOT to carry"...... >:D

To me 6 is too far into the toy-knife category.
I find 7 good for small hands, 8 for medium hands, 9 for large hands.
I'd not cheapen out for a few pennies...

I have a regular #8, an apple green #7 and a bubinga #6.

The #7 gets the most use. The #6 is great because of the look and feel but is kinda small for some tasks. The #8 doesn't get much use because the #7 handles the regular kitchen chores perfectly.

Drilled holes and filled with coloured resin,but didnt like it so painted the handles black,plus there is a pocket clip on the other side  :tu:

FWIW, I have the 6, and it does everything I have ever asked of, disappears into the pocket, and is otherwise a pleasure.

I probably would not carry it if it was much bigger.
 You know the recipient better than any of us...
