Now everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but........ I want to punch this guy in the face. Anyways, decide for yourself. I also do not agree with some of his "logic" on a few things I will mention later.

I don't have a Boker, so I'm not going to weigh in on this or that, but a few points.

1- The first thing he mentions is the price difference. It seems to me you might as well stop the review there? No one is comparing my Tercel to an M3, and I suppose there's a reason for that (It'd be unfair, the Tercel has more interior space, lower maintenance costs, and better fuel economy.. :D :D :D )

2- For better or worse, it did actually make me want to pick up a Boker Tech tool, they look neat (I'll change my mind when I find out what they cost in Oz)

3- In the same breath he says "You can find this tool from both companies with a variety of tool selections" then "the Boker has a better tool selection"

Well....you picked those models for the review mate, it was up to you to choose as like-for-like as possible...

Rescue thingy is scary and useless. Useless as a screwdriver because when using it you risk your limbs. Useless as rescue blade because it does not cut well enough.
Scissors are good at medium stuff (zip-ties etc) but fail at thin soft stuff

Overall, the CityTool is pretty nice. For me if they replace that rescue-thingy with an awl or something, and tweak the scissors a bit, it becomes a true alternative to a SAK. And don't compare it to the Swiza, the Böker is far better than the Swiza.

That's the exact type of simplistic nonsense, generated on a hourly basis, that got me to stop reading one of the large knife forums.

Just watched a few video reviews of the tool and its neat.  I like the blade shape on it and the scales are pretty sweet.  Didn't read the article however.

Sandvik and Victorinox steels both pretty much fall between 420HC and 440A. Not a lot of difference.

Thought about picking up one of the Bokers for the collection, until I found out the Tech-Tools are made in China. That killed it for me.

Did he also just say that Vic uses SS liners?
Quote
Victorinox houses its stainless steel tools in stainless steel liners backed by stainless steel springs.

His attitude to the glass-breaker makes me think he's seen a bit to many action-movies.
Quote
the glass breaker could save crucial seconds should you ever need to flee a building through locked or otherwise inaccessible doors or windows. Just look around any urban environment and imagine that every piece of glass is now an available exit.

In my world there's also the problem of the Boker not really knowing what it wants to be. Does it want to be the slightly more dressy knife with the wine opener? Or the survival type with line-cutter, G10 and glass breaker? There's a certain measure of mall-ninjaness (or would the correct term be mall-ninjutsu?) in the author, that's for sure.

+1

The reviewer talks about the tools you will barely ever need in a pocketknife (the glassbreaker and line cutter) and neglects to say that the SAK has the more useful every day tool set at half the cost. Also, who really cares about the steel type (apart from real enthusiasts)?

He downplays the ease with which SAK scales can be bought and replaced too - a lot cheaper than G10 (though G10 will be much more durable)

It would be interesting if he had included after-sales service as well. I'm not aware of Boker's policy but I bet it doesn't match Vic's.

People who say "harder = better, end of story" don't know too much about steel, if they follow up with "steel type A is harder than steel type Y", they don't know too much about hardening either. ;) Japanese chef knives can have primitive carbon steels hardened to the upper half of the sixties in HRC, for instance. (Brittle as smurf, but slices sushi like a dream.)

("Steel type X will usually be hardened to...", "Steel type X can be hardened to ... without becoming brittle," etc, has a little more connection to reality.)

Edit: I'd generally prefer 12C27 over DIN 1.4110, this was just meant as a jab at the reviewer.

Indeed, with that kind of logic you'd end up with blades made out of Coromant or other steels meant for milling inserts. Hard, oh yes, brittle, ridiculously so.

I was gonna write a long post  detailing inconsistencies etc but meh who cares. That review isn't going to make a difference to Joe blogs who doesn't know or have an opinion about knives like this. Joe will probably buy along the lines of "hey my dad had a red knife with a cross on...I'll get one of them" or he will just buy any old junk and not care. Serious knife enthusiasts know it's a smurf review, and mall ninjas want folding tomahawks that have concealed katanas in the handles not T&T...so in short...meh hope he enjoys his paycheck.

Since I carried a CityTool 3 during the off-brand-challenge

Blade is awesome, for me the best MT blade I have handled. I'm in love with that blade.
Scales are nice

Rescue thingy is scary and useless. Useless as a screwdriver because when using it you risk your limbs. Useless as rescue blade because it does not cut well enough.
Scissors are good at medium stuff (zip-ties etc) but fail at thin soft stuff

Overall, the CityTool is pretty nice. For me if they replace that rescue-thingy with an awl or something, and tweak the scissors a bit, it becomes a true alternative to a SAK. And don't compare it to the Swiza, the Böker is far better than the Swiza.

My thoughts are pretty much the same. I have the Outdoor 6, so I can report the saw works as well as the SAK. The only minor gripe I have is that I wish the mini-driver would fit the corkscrew. The pitch looks the same, but it looks like the diameter of the stock is a bit thicker. I might try to alter one to fit.

I can see where the reviewer is coming from. I do think Böker has some good ideas here-- the G10, belt clip, overall design, ergos, materials, I think edge out Victorinox' offerings. A few little design changes (dump the useless screwdriver at the end of the serrated blade, improve the scissors, get a Philips in there somewhere) and bring fit & finish up a notch, and Vic will have some serious competition. Or let Victorinox borrow a few ideas-- scales, asymmetrical handle profile, belt clip-- and it's game over for Böker.
